There are a quite few wargames out there, some board, others computer, many aren't published any more; but I bet the members here could tell you what is still sold. I liked the Squad Leader series, the Wooden Ships Iron Men game, but I never really got into any others.

There aren’t enough history nerds like us out there to fuel the market. CA caters to a niche market. Mindless morons just don't appreciate history games... evidently those are the same people who comprise the majority of the gaming market

There's fair amount of "history" games (if I understand your usage correctly):

    Hearts of Iron series
    Combat Mission series

Not sure why the rest of it is missing.... continuing:

American Civil War series (Gettysburg, Battle of Bull Run)
    Silent Hunter III
    Cossacks II
    Civilization series
    Gary Grigsby's World at War
    Strategic Command

    quite simply: history is boring

    and furthermore:

humans as a species, generally speaking, are not interested in old things

just look at video games for a perfect modern example. if you start talking about the masterpiece video game titles of the 1990's, then it's likely the majority of today's gamers will have no clue whatsoever what you're talking about. going back to the 80's just makes this situation even worse. and there is certainly no chance of an average modern gamer going back and trying to acquire and play any old games despite how great they were.

it seems that humans have some kind of warped need of "having new, simply for the sake of new"

try handing someone yesterday's newpaper. no one will ever read it. unless he's some sort of weird sicko freak! but from this simple act we can see yet again that people only want new things. old is not interesting to humans.

of course the patrons of this site are for a large part an exception to that general rule. but the numbers of those who are like-minded to them in this regard are not enough to warrant Publishers making games based on old stuff that most people have no interest in

No, rather: The gaming crowd believes history is boring.
But as with everything it only has to do with how it is presented to you.

I bet you that I could make all kinds of very popular subjects very boring by simply having them presented by those boring history teachers most of us have had to drag with. The problem I believe is that the teachers aren't really that much into history and thus can't be bothered with it.
