Wedge is only available for lancer type cavalry units and maybe non-lancer light cavalry like Round Shields, but not skirmisher cavalry.

I still hope that CA meets my plea and include the ability to make custom formations in the next game. This way you can make your own formation and just hit one button instead of group, place, ungroup, group each block of units to get them in static formation then doing it all over again for every block/ sort of unit you have.
