Ive talked with someone playing RTR, now he is playing Chivalry TW mod. He is of oppinion that Chivalry TW mod is curently best balanced mp mod around.
    Chivalry TW mod

I didn't want to hijack this threat. I hope you don't mind this post. Anyhow RTR or Chivalry mod.
It would be much better if more people would play one of them.

    Good luck.

Imorthorn - If you are getting a incompatible data message preventing you from joining online RTR games, it seems to be due to two auto-generated map.rwm files. To allow you to join the game, all players must delete these files - there is a shortcut in the RTR directory called RTR-Patcher.bat. This must also be repeated in between games - I just have a shortcut to it on my desktop and alt-tab out and run it after I play a game.

    Imorthorn , try the following:

go to your RTW directory file , then go to data, world, maps, base ( delete the map.rwm file )
now go back to maps , now select campaign, RTR , the select the same file as before and also delete this file.

you should have deleted 2 ( the same ) files.
    MP should work now.

PS this is exactly the same as Nihilist said
and beware , you will have to delete those files every time you want to play a MP battle
