I have to ask exactly why we can't use custom avatars hosted from our own hosts; it's not like a 3kb 50x50 gif is going to kill anyone's connection.

If every user on this board could be trusted to host an avatar that was suitable and that did not breach the forum rules then I'm sure this would be an option. However, unfortunately as we are regularly reminded, that is not the case.

I personally am grateful for the current idea of the site hosting a custom avatar, it means I won't be left *naked* when my site runs out of bandwidth

It is also do with giving a more close knit feel by having themes.

If you're referring to the size of the image by that, vBulletin automatically checks the physical size of the image and how many pixels it takes up. But, since you're probably referring to someone posting a picture of a nice pair of breasts, wouldn't that problem also be prevalent in custom signatures?

IIRC, the admins and mods are currently discussing the reintroduction of custom avatars, but then with a theme guideline, vB's checking abilities and, if I am not mistaken, on the main board and not a separate skin like the old days.

I'm quite happy with my Nag Cav :)

I like how you can often tell when someone joined up just by looking at their avatar.
maybe those guys should be doing something more useful...

Well, it wouldn't necessarily be a problem if it was a _nice_ pair

Seriously, though, I understand your point, we police the signatures so why not the avatars as well? Perhaps there's some technical reason for it, but from my perspective for some reason that it always seems that you get more trouble, content-wise, with avatars than with signatures. Don't know why.

And as Papewaio said, the Total War avatars have become part of the Org's style that sets it apart from other TW fansites.
