without a doubt i would be playing the 20,000 man per army game.
Because when i'm in the heat of battle in RTW and " zoomed out "
the you beaut graphics don't look so good anyways.
More men charging towards me = more fear,
more fear = better exitement
The better exitement = better game,

STW 20,000![]()
One of the reasons i hate rome is the pitifull amount of men.
when u see 120 no dachi charging at you in STW,
You thought OMG I better do something.
Then you saw 120 Yari cav coming at you from the other flank,![]()
And its time to Panic,![]()
Yell OMG And tell your yari samurai ,
"RUN Over there" Protect me!!!
and send your own 120 no dachi to attack the 120 no dachi that are charging you,![]()

Just to cool,
In rome, its
Oh here comes a few units of horse men,

I have to agree, compared to RTW, the battles in MTW and STW were absolutely massive. I remember my first battle as the english, invading scotland, and i thought wow, this is big, even though it was only 500 v 600. And then my next battle against the Germans, i thought WOW!! because the battle was huge. It was 5000 v 5000, and it was amazing. And now, i look at RTW, and i think, hm, yes, a battle. Only 500 v 500...
The more the better i guess...
Were the MTW battles really bigger then RTW?
I don't think there is too much in terms of graphics difference between MTW and STW. It looks like it's running the same engine, so I don't see that there is a huge difference there.
On the other hand it's been a long time since I've played STW.
I voted MTW , but I didn't play STW and if you say grphics is all the same than cnsider me voted for STW![]()
Battle graphics of STW with 20,000 men.I also miss the fog from STW......it was so realistic.I would however like to keep the 3-D MAP from RTW as i love to block mountain passes, ambush and contest fords and bridges.
"Go tell the Spartans, stranger passing by that here, obedient to their laws we lie."
i would go for 20000 units, mtw style and rtw graphics

STW has some HUGE battlesOriginally Posted by mongoose

You cant see ALL my units there either But close enough

Rtw may have snazzy gfx But They lost A lot of feeling from the battles,
I say STW is still the best for the feel of a battle

RTW is much more CPU intensive, but if you've got a fast PC it's possible to have just as big battles in RTW as on thoose screens.
I've had custom battles with over 6000 men in RTW, i can't run with all graphics at max then but it looks much much better than MTW or STW even with the graphics turned down so it runs good.
Bigger battles......detail is nothing during command, however let's not forget that both STW and MTW had their army size limits. If there was a battle between 2 armies, each 5000 men strong, they would not all be present on the field. Many is the time I crushed the army before me and waited for reinforcements to arrive only to kill them as they entered the field. I have always wished for massive battles but let's have them all take to the field at the start of battle.
Still, nice screenshots Shambles. Only STW has captured the feeling of true battlefields IMO
.........Orda
well those are 16 x 120 units x2 All on feild at once,
and ive even had 16 x 120 x 4
Around 4k and 8k or something respectivly
But those are custom battles,
You can get even more on the feild if you try

Custom and MP battles .. Yes obviously but in SP campaign it will not happen. I never had the chance to defeat an army 5 times my size that rolled on and on beyond my flanks, just silly reinforcements that were easily slaughtered
.....Orda
The real questions is, what would you pick.
STW graphics but a steller AI?
MTW graphics with a good AI?
RTW graphics with a crappy AI?
The graphics just don't matter if the gameplay sucks. Now Rome graphics with a stell AI with 20,000 troops in battle at the same time would rock my world! I might never leave home.
I would defently vote for MTW. That game just had it all for me. Many exciting and blood pressure rising battles for me. Especially against those evil Mongols.
When ignorance reigns life is lost.
War is norm, Fight the War, Screw the norm!
if we had, Shogun TW battle Ambiance muscis fogging and feel.
With MTW camapigng and RTW battle placement for the campaign
I.e mountains on the terrain in trhat point where you drop your unit Battle would be there.
And RTW gfx.
Id be deeply deeply In love,
Having said that,
Even without the rome tw Gfx Id be deeply deeply in love,
I will explain my reasoning,
I love the STW battles.
I REALLY REALLY Love them, They have Always had this Timlesss qualaty about them
YOU just knew when there was trouble. You could feel it in the air,
Then you have the Mtw Campaign mode,
It's amazing in comparison to STW. You have So much more controll of your provinces exetrera Its Just amazing,
And then you get Rome total war with it's snazzy gfx and tonns of advertisement and hype,
It really does have Exilent potential,
If they kept the basic structure of STW Battle feel exetera.
Then added MTW economy and campaig with a smattering of the new stuff rome brought in.
And then added RTW gfx It would be Ground breaking.
What they did wrong "just like every one does"
Is forget where theyve been,
They remade RTW from scratch Wich ment they couldnt really use ANYTHING from the other 2
where as had they worked from the ground up from STW as they did with mtw,
They could have cept the general style of play,
And just added better gfx.
But they did not and there BOLD step in to the unkown has caused a Lot of controversy particulary among the older gamers. who played the previos versions,
I really have all faith in them to bring out a better version again and again.
But not untill they are fully educated in this new technology.
Its unfortunate that they rushed out RTW in such a manner as the other 2 games Really were grond breaking,
STW for its feel and ambiance
And mtw for its units and campaign.
However for RTW they tried to do both and improove gfx on a tight scedule and ended up releasinga unfinished poorly made game with Moronic ai And more bugs than could fill a bed,
So i still say Id like
STW with 20.000 men
above rtw gfx and 5k men

I prefer MTW, but I just had a 1000 vs. 2000 battle in RTW. For the RTW system.......OMG THATS HUGE!
At your service, Evil_Maniac From Mars, the suprised TW player
That's an entirely different question, to that i would vote STW without hesitation! I'd rather have small battles and less than good graphics if theOriginally Posted by Satyr

MTW redone with RTW's graphics and campaign map layout, greatly enhanced AI, bigger battles and even better modding support.![]()
I think you guys are being a bit hard on MTW in your quest for retrogression.
Although STW had amazing battles so did MTW. They are totally different playing styles and those of you who prefer the STW playing style to the MTW playing style are being unneccisarily cruel on MTW. Its battles were just as good as STW.
However...STW music and FMV's were far greater.
The main disagreement I have with the whole 20,000 man army thing is that it just didn't happen in STW and MTW. You fought with 1,000 man armies and they drip-fed your re-inforcements. Sure the battles were longer and better than RTW but number could never be used to the same effect as they should be. In RTW, if the AI was good (a big if) He could surround you and fight a battle with 2 to 1 odds easily.
My choice is still STW w/20,000men but if they are drip fed than the effect would be negigible.

"It is easy to dismiss war as a simple bloody affair, nevertheless, none can deny that the greatest genious that man has possesed has always been in the pursuit of the simple, bloody affair", Klausewitz
If we play for better graphics now the tech needs to improve. This supports better PCs and then better scale.
Always push the envelope.
I vote graphics, but my first love remains Shogun.

Those of us, who played STW first, remember it as harder yes?
the AI was "better"
sure, my first game of STW was bloody challenging.
MTW ...not quite as hard.
RTW ...no where near as hard.
why is this?
the AI has gotten progesivley worse as the titles go on?
no.
although the original battlefield stupidity of the AI displayed in RTW was annoying.
similar things could have ben said, (and were said) for unpatched, non VI MTW.
consider that, us veterans have been playing TW, since STW or MTW.
consider that, the basic game mechanics have not really changed.
go back to your first game of TW, hard?
did you not find say MTW allot easyer the second time you played it?
the AI can only go so far.
it cant be human. it cant adapt and work like a human mind.
so we are not going to have super AI for RTW, all we can do is put the human at a disadvantage.
and most likely CA are setting up the higher difficulty levels on the expansion just for this purpose.
the problem is not bad AI.
The problem is, we have been playing TW for god knows how long.
have just gotten too damn good.
STW graphics with 20,000 men![]()
Lets be honest, we all zoom out as far as we can anyway in order to get the best strategic view of the battlefield. In the middle of a hectic battle you don't have time to zoom in on your men and look at how pretty they are.
In answer to the other question, STW graphics and stellar AI, no question.
"I request permanent reassignment to the Gallic frontier. Nay, I demand reassignment. Perhaps it is improper to say so, but I refuse to fight against the Greeks or Macedonians any more. Give my command to another, for I cannot, I will not, lead an army into battle against a civilized nation so long as the Gauls survive. I am not the young man I once was, but I swear before Jupiter Optimus Maximus that I shall see a world without Gauls before I take my final breath."

so...you wouldnt preffer, "stellar" as you put it AI, RTW graphics, and 20,000 men?Originally Posted by Mount Suribachi

10,000 mtw gfx
or
5,000 with RTW gfx,
If there was and option for 20,000 with rtw gfx prehaps people would say that,
But that option is not there,
and mearly adding it your self is not really what the creator of this therad had intended,
SO I say more men all the way
p.s
I find STW ai and MTW ai more chalanging than RTW AI To this day,
In rtw You can sit on top of a hill watch the AI walk at you then turn back then walk at you then turn back
And do this over and over untill it has lost,
SO The AI sux,
Its noit that i am better than i was
It realy is the Ai got dumb
also the AI in mtw would often be just as dumb,
But the only time i ever encountered dumb Ai in stw was when i hid cav archers in range of the AI army, but on the other side of a hill,
For some reason they never saw me,
I considerd this to be becous of the AI's LOS

hmm, im talking in specific about about battlefeild AI.Originally Posted by Shambles

has the campign AI really changed that much?
a single battle overall, is not always the important thing.
but the ai's tatics on the campign map are.
and to me, nothing much has changed in that regard.
if anything the AI has advanced, simply becasue it can now do more thanks to the new campign map.
as for battlefield, well.
if you need really challenging battles.
then do what i do, have mate round, with his computer, and duke it out.
dammnit, i could do with an edit button :S
"i am *not* talking in specfic about battlefiled AI"
Well I voted 20000 STW.
But I get 5000 RTW on my PC fairly easily & its not even close to cutting edge.
I have had multiple SP battles of roughly 4000 vs 8000+ & thats no piece of cake even with the lame ai & an elite 4000.
20000 RTW with advanced AI would be awesome.
maybe those guys should be doing something more useful...
