    Hi guys,

If there is something I never did in STW was to make a map!

So just before the release of the new map editor I decided to make a map. Yes, only one map so that I will concentrate on it and do my best.

Any basic suggestions or points I should always remember?

    hehe tera,

decided to join the damned, eh?

read tosa's notes and his doc file and read my notes in here. and start simple, then just keep expanding from there.

and remember, the frustration you feel is not your fault ;)

Read, printed and learnt tosa's doc. Really good one.

I read the topic on the demo editor, yes I found some nice ideas there. Thanks.

I am now taking notes on the different textures, there are so many of them!

I didn't understand one thing though:-
how do you round off a hill top? (pressing spacebar makes the top pointed and when i pressed enter nothing seemed to happen...)

    Thanks
    Tera

hehehe, you didnt read my notes, apparently ;) it's in the topic 'demo editor (not rob's editor)'. but i'll repeat it for ya since those notes are so disheveled.

there are two ways you could do it; you could raise and/or lower that particular hill until it sort of rounded out on its own, or, you can use the the 'return' key WHILE you are in the height changing mode. the latter of those two, however, will round off ALL sharp points on the map, not just one.

i've often sort of jokingly said that this is the goofiest editor i've ever seen, but in fact, it's actually a pretty good one. there just wasnt any documentation to go with it, and it does have a few bugs. tosa and i have poked around and found quite a few of these features and managed to convey them from time to time in our own notes and docs. tosa is a bit more organized than i am so he wrote up a whole file on it. me, i'm more the mad scientist so i just stuffed all my notes here on the org and let it go at that, but there are some gems in there, if yer willing to listen to my long-winded explanations....like this one ;)

and, every now and then we'll find some other little gimmick or trick to use. tosa recently found out how to add bridges and i found out some of the rules and shortcuts for placing them on the maps. i also found a new feature that i cant even document very well cause i have no idea really what it does...but it's there.

hopefully, when the new editor comes out, there will be full docs on it...well, maybe not hopefully. it's actually been somewhat fun at times finding these little surprises to make things easier and better and it may even work out that some things will still be easier to do in the demo editor...so we'll see.

oh, p.s., get tosa's texture maps. they are on the org and at www.takiyama.cjb.com . they can help you with seeing what textures match up to other textures. they are maps that tosa did that have all the textures in them. i forget the file name right off hand but it shld be fairly obvious. it's down in the tools section of the maps section.

    Thanks Krae!

Read that topic and printed it for convenience...

I am trying to do something like a volcano in my map...you know Mt Fuji...hehe

    Hey,

This map editor maybe difficult but it is utterly fun!

Thanks to Kraellin's and Tosa's tips I could work as much wysiwyg as I could and also I learn many textures after many experiments.

I have finished the borders of the map and I included scars, rocks, dirt, a forest and different land textures like #87.

In cenre I have made 3 farm villages, a monastery and two roads with #22, #23 and the #25 intersect.

This map will be flat with only some nice textured hills in the borders for posterity.

Tommorow I will *try* to make the inland relief which in my opinion is basic but it is the most important part and difficult to conceive because battles are fought there...

So, for this summary, any tips or comments???

    Thanks,

    Tera

    Kraellin,

The file I have sent you and the actual map for download are different because some things changed in it.
