    Default This date in history:

    (June 7th)

On this day in 1099 the Crusaders (of what would be the 1st Crusade) reached the walls of Jerusalem. Out of a possible 60,000 that set out, the force was down to some 12,000.

If you count the first wave of the first crusade (the so-called 'Peasant's Crusaders', most of whom died or turned back, but some of whom, such as Peter the Hermit, joined the second or offical wave of the crusade after the Peasant's crusade was more or less ended by the Turks of Anatolia), and also count the large numbers of crusaders who set out but turned back or died along the way, then the numbers were actually far greater than 60,000. The 12,000 at Jerusalem were combat effectives-- there was still a host of noncombatants as well, who also considered themselves 'crusaders'.

But that, of course, is nitpicking.

Hey Pindar, ever thought of changing the title of this thread by taking out the specific date? This could be an ongoing, 'this date in history' thread--might be fun.

Bugger doesn't seem to let me edit the title.

I'll start a new thread that's not date specific.
