Default OK, what did I do wrong THIS time?!

Having decided to “beef up” the non-Roman factions a bit, I tried modding their starting treasuries and populations. Everything seemed OK until I tried to start an Imperial Campaign. When I did, I was immediately booted back to the Main Menu. I'd been careful not to take any single population up to the next settlement level, so I can’t see where I went wrong. Is there a hard-coded limit to starting treasuries and/or populations?

No, not to my knowledge. Use show_err and if you don't get an error message then post your descr_strat here in [*code] tags so people can have a look at it. Hard to help otherwise.

Thanks for the advice, ER. Unfortunately my Disk 1 has a crack in it and I can't load the game at the moment. Oh well, at least my wife will see a bit more of me..!

BTW, how do I use show_err?

Read this. A few things that all modders should know.

I know what to do. If you increase the population above the towns capacity e.g. the max capacity of a town is 6000, and then it gets upgraded and you increase it to 7000, then it won't work. You have to upgrade the town. So if you want a huge city, you have to put an imperial palace in there, and then you can increase the population to 24000+. And as for starting treasuries, as long as you don't go above 99,999,999, you should be fine. Any higher, and you'll start off in something like 1,400,000,000 debt.

Also delete map.rwm after editing map related files.

It seems to be a common belief that religious people are just existentialists taking things a bit too seriously.

You don't have to delete that file when just editing the descr_strat.txt file, at least not for populations, starting treasuries and stuff like that.

OK, new disks arrived yesterday, so I tried a few experiments. Increasing starting treasuries - fine, no problems at all. Carthage and the Seleucids are now swimming in cash. (Hah! That'll teach you Egyptian bastards! ) Making ANY other changes in descr_strat locked me out of the Imperial Campaign. Lowering the Egyptian population, giving the Germans farms, making the Carthaginian faction leader and his heir 10 years younger - same result every time. Still, the increased treasuries should make a difference to the more vulnerable factions.

Did you only try making one change at a time? If you're not certain about changing ages et al, just make one change, then see if it works. You'll be able to better pin-point what isn't working so the nice chaps and non-chaps here can help you out.

Changing buildings for example shouldn't pose a problem, but a typo or something might.

Yep, that's exactly what I did, one change at a time. When it came to adding farms I cut and pasted to avoid typos but still nothing, nada, zero, zip, zilch... and a whole load of diddley-squat!

BTW Prof, I installed your Carthaginian archer mod today - nice work!

Cheers, I hope it's useful to you.

As to your continuing editing problems: crikey, I can't imagine how the campaign could always go wrong just by making one or two minor changes.

How about reverting back to a working descr_strat.txt file, then as Richard earlier suggested, posting the part you changed when it stopped working. There must be an explanation. Our fine-tooth combs are at the ready.

    YAY!!! It's all working!

I haven't the faintest idea why, but today every modification is fine. I had to juggle the Carthaginian family members' ages a bit, but other than that no problems at all. Gaul and Germania have bigger populations and more farms, there are more Seleucids and fewer Egyptians, and with Carthage an economic powerhouse able to field archers and ballistas the next campaign should be really interesting!

Thanks for all the help, guys. I really appreciate it.
