Getting bored with my games collection

Periodically I get bored with all the games I've got in collection, and I've got about 50+ and everything from Everquest to RTW to Championship Manager. I am looking for suggestions guys, ideally something like the tactics side of RTW.

One of my favourite games on playstation was Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat where you had various units of troops and you went from one battle to the next with limited chances to recruit reinforcements in between, something along these lines would be ideal for the times when I don't want the in depth game and I just want to cut to the killing . I prefer the medievil timeline or the fantasy swords and sorcery. I have tried Mount and Blade and I think it'll be great when it's finished but the battlefield isn't really big enough, I've also tried Imperial Glory but it is in dire need of a patch.

So, any recommendations?

I enjoyed many evenings playing Shadow of the Horned Rat. There was a follow up to that called Dark Omen. It came out a few years later and I had moved on to other games. Have you played it yet? If not then it should be a cheap option if not a little outdated.

Have you tried Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War? If you like Warhammer, you may enjoy it - although it's not fantasy. It's basically an RTS, but has some nice gameplay features (no resource gathering) and more tactics (rock-scissor-paste) that make it bearable. It's lovingly made - gorgeous graphics, characterful sound, high production values etc - and anyone who likes Warhammer should fine those appealing. The demo is worth downloading for the opening movie itself.

Beyond that, can you give any more information on what games you like? It sounds you are looking for a Total War clone and these don't really exist right now. (Imp Glory does not count!) The recent games I've enjoyed most have been RPGs - specifically Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II and the criminally under-rated Vampires: Bloodlines which is jaw-dropping.

Two old strategy games I keep coming back to are Imperialism II and Jagged Alliance 2. Imp2 has a recent thread here. JA2 is the best turn-based squad-level tactical game of all time, IMO, and has wonderful RPG/strategic elements.

I've actually got Dark Omen, but can't get it to run on my comp.

For some reason Dark Omen does not like new 3d graphics cards, so you must disable hardware acceleration and use software mode. It's bit uglier this way but that can't be helped. To change to software mode go to options under main menu. Also turn colour cursors off from the same menu.

I bought Warhammer 40k when it came out and though it's very pretty I wasn't that impressed and it's been sitting on my shelf ever since.

Tried to get DO working and while the game ran the screen was so pixelated I couldn't see anything. I'm going to go back to Blitzkreig for a while, not exactly the setting I was looking for but never mind

I recently bought Sid Meier's Pirates for £10 off Amazon.co.uk (2nd hand seller) and really enjoyed the game. A real laugh... you might like that...

Get a flightstick and buy the Il2 series of flightsims. IL2-Forgotten Battles + ACE Expansion Pack + Pacific Fighters. It will take you quite a while to master the dozens of fighters and bombers. Great fun to fly, great eye candy, fantastic WWII combat action and a good history lesson all at once. But it does require a bear of a machine to run at high settings.

Flightsims have inifinite replayability. Never the same twice.

Hell, pick up Microsoft Flightsim 2004 and fly at full realism. Try landing a 747 in a thunderstorm at night in high winds. That'll make you humble very, very fast.

A game that has yet to come out named Stranger has a sort of table-top, swords-and-sorcery feel to it, but I think it is a real-time game. I like the busy graphics.

If you're willing to spring for a futuristic look, you could try the Massive Assault games. These are hex-grid TBS games.

If you want a good action/strategy oriented game, buy Monster Hunter for the PS2. It was released in Sep. last year, but it still rocks.

Yeah the Il2 series are great, don't have the exp. packs though, I just have 'forgotten battles'' really good game once you get the hang of it.

I have Flightsim 2004 too, but that I thought was a really hard game - meaning I couldn't get a plane in the air without swinging from left to right on the runway - and I don't really have the patience to fly 8 hour flight from new york to Amsterdam in a 747
