Just to clarify a liitle!

The actual texture a model uses is described iun descr_model_battle.txt

This file also has the definition of which model to use when displaying the unit. The game does it this way so you can actually define a different texture to the same model if you use it for another faction. For example.... in my Hyborean mod, I have made a set of militia and peasants for the Asgard forces. Their neighbours the Vanir are pretty much the same, except the easir were blond haired, and hte vsanir red haired. Hperborea had some similarities, but they were 'dark'. So...rather than have a fixed 'this texture goes on this model' I can use the same model with different paint-jobs.

Sometimes, though, you have to be a bit more careful. Units like the wardogs have to have the texture properly assigned in Max, with the material in it';s correct location.
