Thread: a few more questions

  1. #1

    Default a few more questions

Why is there a Jesus General if Jesus had no army?
Why is there a colliseum in Rome but not in Greece?
Why is there not a video of battles?
Why do they allow you to change history with historical battles?
Why do they allow you to conquer any settlements you want?
    Why no historical campignes?
    why no create-a-unit or create-a-faction?

The fun for me with total war games, and most other people I think, is the part of changing history. By playing as the Gauls, it makes it more fun to stick it to the Romans and change history. Thats what the game is all about. If it wasn't and you had to stick to history, it would be kinda boring wouldn't it?

As coldknight said. If you don't have the power to do what you will, then where's the fun? RTW's replay value would be basically 0 if you could only do historical things. So instead the player has the ability to do as they wish.

    why no create-a-unit or create-a-faction?
because there isn't. making those sort of tools would have taken CA much longer todo (if even possible) and rtw might have never been released until 05.

Anyways if there were a create a factions/unit, people who are not modification friendly, like me, would screw it up horribly. I would have the game so screwed up it would never work again.

no. because making those sort of tools is impossible for the rtw engine. Making new units required edditing coutless txt docs as well as skins. Factions are the same.

Alright...but why the hell did they say it would be "The most moddable game ever"? Was that just a lie to get people to buy the game?

anyway, to answer the last questions...

Why is there a Jesus General if Jesus had no army?
read other topics, the answer is there.

Why is there a colliseum in Rome but not in Greece?
because the Collosseum was in Roma not Greece. If you really want one in greece, conquer it and build one there.

Why is there not a video of battles?
    what?

    Why no historical campignes?
They were dropped from RTW before release. CA wanted to concentrate on the main campaign.

most moddable TW game, that much is true. as far as "most moddable game ever" i doubt it. You should ask CA, not me.

I am fairly sure they said "If it had a middle name, it would be 'moddable'"

    Awfully misleading, isn't it?

I'm not sure. but consider all the major mods that have sprung up around rtw. EB, RTR, SPQR, Blue Lotus, SJ. not to mention countless skins/new province packs and map editions. I'd say even thought there's a lot of hardcoded elements of RTW, it's still very moddable.

I'll admit that...but look at this...

Contrast against another game I have modded, Battlefield 1942. They released a Mod Development Kit (upgraded at least three times with new features), which contained packing/unpacking tools, mod tutorials, map editors, and various other things (all of which we had to hack and create ourselves for RTW); they set up an online modding support site, where all of the in-game values and parameters were explained to modders (nothing exists for RTW); Most of the mechanics for the entire game were accessable (very little for RTW). I believe they even provided their own conversion tool to send s into 3DSMax and GMax, as well as an unwrapping tool. NONE of the modding tools for BF1942 were fan created, though I think a fan created an alternate map editor (not liking the released one). Not a single appreciative parameter was hard-coded (or if they were, they had limits near infinity, as no modder has run into it yet).

The modding support for RTW consists of: Occasional, infrequent (though valuable) posts by an RTW developer in a fan forum. Everything else is fan-created, from the tools to the tutorials. And, of course, we're stymied by hard code everywhere.

Compared to my experience modding BF1942, which WAS very simple, a breeze really, modding RTW has been a frustrating, tedious experience that I would never have continued if I didn't like this project so much.
In terms of overall moddability, RTW may not even beat MTW, much less other -contemporary- games (Fallout 2 and Jagged Alliance 2 are much older).

And this is coming from an EB member.

That is something that makes me sad. CA were supposed to release tools for the modding of rtw, and i believe someone even found the remnants of what appeared to be a campaign editor inside the .CAS files that they scrapped. It's really hard to tell what went on behind the closed doors at CA that changed their minds about the moddable side of RTW. maybe some of that hardcoded material will change with BI, but that is perhaps wishful thinking...

oh well...we seemed to have hijacked the thread. Sorry Clayton...

1:I don't think jesus is in the game...do you have screenshot of him?
2:I guess they thought that it would make the nations more unique
    3:Too time consuming to make?
4: They would be boring other wise
    5:Makes the game more fun
6:Actually, that would be really cool. maybe they ran out of time
7:Ca dosent like it when people mod the game...(The PR people, not the devs)

THIS IS A GAME, STOP TREATING IT LIKE REALITY! You will find it makes more sense that way and you can ask less questions.

The ability to change history is what makes 'historical' games good, to succeed where others have failed. A game that follows a set historical course would be boring. Its not real life just enjoy it as a 'game'.

How DARE you deny the existence of the Lord. My belief in him is enough. If you believed in RTW hard enough, you'd see Him.

    I have a question:

Corinth (the town next to the Statue of Zeus) starts with a stone wall. But it starts as a Large Town. Large Towns can only have Wooden Walls, so does everyone else's Corinth defy the laws of the game, or is my game just different?
