Default Do you use troop restrictions ??

    Hi everyone

As per the title can you let me know what troop restrictions you use please? I know some people rush to get places like Carthage but I find it very unrealistic to take an enemies capital and then start pumping out high quality units. In my recent Julii campaign I restrict all troop production to my starting 2 cities. I also did not build cavalry but used 2 generals per army plus a mercenary cavalry unit. I have heard some mods use ZOR (Zones Of Recruitment) which sounds a great idea.

    Your thoughts are appreciated.

I've been using no cavalry (apart from Generals) for my current campaign (Lundus Magnus, hard, hard, Scipii) and have found it to be very challenging to try and keep my flanks protected against AI cavalry.

Makes it a lot more fun though.

I only build troops in my homeland provinces and only at the level my best city can provide. When I take a city, high or low evolved, I always rise all buildings and start building from scratch in that city. The only military structure I build outside my homelands are barracks. Now, I play RTR, and they´ve applied a ZoR-system to it so my game-style is therefore favourable to that particular mod.

    Hi Centurion Officer

I agree that all units are fair but the AI does not get up the tech tree quite as quick as I do, and yes I know I could slow down. Also I do not find it realistic to take a high-tech town thousands of miles away and to be pumping out high-tech units straight away.

I have spoiled my current Julii camapign by pillaging gaul towns as they are now too far down the tech tree. When I restart I will have to set a new rule so I do not destroy enemy buildings for cash.

Well I was trying out a city state type campaign with the Greek's, so I kept Sparta, but then one city far in the East near Jerlusuam (spelling?) I captured, & teched up, keeping a standing garrison in the city (which is horribly needed with all those Egypitains running around), and kept a standing army to march & fight with in a Fort that I have on Seleucid territory, which we are both allies, have trade agreements, & military rights on each others land.

The other standing army is in a Fort just a few miles to the North West of Sparta, aside of the Garrison in the city there which is needed becaue if its attacked, I must be able to defend it since its one of the three cities that I have.

Ask why three cities? Well I decided to ship a army of Spartans & capture Rome, still waiting for the A.I. Roman factions to ship over there to battle it out, I can see them in route on the map hehehe, cant wait for that action.

But how does this pertain to unit restrictions? Well, since I'm only running three cities now, I produce the best units that I can get my hands on to keep this Empire alive!

Trust me, in the East, I dont get what is going on with those Egypitans.

I built up a nicely tech'ed army over there, & marched it against the Egyptians when they were seiging a Seleucid city, giving my allies aid you know.

Well we fought, but all of my highly teched Armoured Hoplies ran away after 10 seconds of battle, got ran down, & massacred!

So, after repeated things of this, even with Armoured Hoplites teched with three bronze chevrons of experience, I went into the game files & increased their mental discipline... no effect, so I did it again.. past what the Spartans come stock with! No effect!!!

Is this a bug or somthing? Fighting Egyptians makes your men scared beyond reason or somthing? They fought the Romans so simply, but in the East on Egypitan turff, its like they see an Egyptian, and they with their 18 mental & 3 bronze chevrons run away like a scared rabbit.. when they should be able to kick the Egyptians ass!

ya your right about the tech tree thing like for example in my greece campaign i just got a little bit ahead of pontus and rome and only like 40 years later i have around 60 settlement and it was a breeze i kill numidia go against carthage only lasted since i took out scipii and senate in 10 15 years and i totaly took out eypt in a mattter of 5 to 8 turns so ya i would like the AI to develop faster the jullii havne't ever doen the reforment (they surrendered to me that why theere not dead) so u do have a good point

Get the Roma mod if you want a realistic build-dealio, Roman troops are only built in central Italy and auxillery are built everywhere else.
Fighting isn't about winning, it's about depriving your enemy of all options except to lose.

Is the Roma mod RTR or another mod ? I have tried the latest version of RTR but it is slow going getting through the first few years.

I tried the Roma mod but found it too much like a frustrating brain teaser rather than a fun historical wargame (yes, it is for RTR but greatly weakens your Romans stats and money while vastly pumping up all enemies in numbers). However, it did inspire me to go back to RTR and play with the restriction the original poster mentioned of only recruiting Roman units from my two starting towns. The game is still a little too easy, but close to the sweet spot. It gives the game some character to have a small hardcore of experienced Roman units supported by mercs appropriate to your location (currently run around with a lot of Libyans and Numidians in North Africa).

The RTR mod gets rid of the need for a lot of troop restrictions as Romans. Cavalry and missiles are not so overpowered as they are in vanilla SP, although RTR javelins and slings are suprisingly good. A historical Roman army - lots of heavy infantry - might even be close to optimal in RTR.

I agree the RTR mod is a big of a slog. Not sure they needed to increase the number of provinces. But right now it's got my interest.
