First, take as many of the target royal's men and give them to other units, then put the target royal in a stack, conquer a province with him, pull all of the troops except him, and let the province rebel or be attacked by another faction, retreat to the castle and wait for the ransoom note.

Sorry dude, I just don't have the cash right now!

It's cheesy but sometimes a prince just won't die.

OOOOOOH - I LIKE IT!! - going have to remember that one - I never use assasins on my (bad) heirs - but they DO often get drunk and go out and attack a huge enemy force to prove how great they are.... *grin*

(especially the ones with secret pride and such - huge valor and no command)

    I'm completely sick of assassins.

Whenever I go after a diplomat or princess with a fresh (0 stars) killer, they lead him on a merry chase around the ports of the world until (9 out of 10 times) he meets his demise in a province with a border fort.

The 1 out of 10 times, in which I get a successful kill (usually on the other side of the world), I have to remember to bring the poor guy home before they build a border fort. Overly time-consuming....

My assassins on the borders of my territory aren't getting skilled up because no one is sending their assassins or spies into my territory.

    OK, I've finished whining now.

Use them defensively, stick your king in an interior province so agents trying to talk to him can't just run away though a port.
Fighting isn't about winning, it's about depriving your enemy of all options except to lose.
