Best 'NEW' Director (IYO)

Who is your favorite 'new director? Now by new I mean like started in the 90's(or at most early 80's[especially if the best work is in the 90's]) and has been making amazing films in a row.

I put up a poll, if you don't like the selection, DON'T BITCH!!! Just quietly post who you think is the best IYO. I won't include an other choice because it's quite meaningless.

Mine: Tarantino, [close second is Fincher(he meeds to do more great films)]

I've been debating this for years now and still can't figure out who I like the best. They are all soooo freaken talented.

I admit Inarittu is amazing though, that should be enough. 21 grams was one of the most real movies about death I have ever seen.

i like wes anderson and tarantino, usually. however, my current favorite "new" director is probably christopher nolan (memento, batman begins, US remake of insomnia).

Tarantino is terrible IMO, Kill Bill was so bad I couldn't last the whole film.

Incidentally I just saw Kung Fu Hussle which was billed as the film Tarantino wished he made, and while it was quite odd it was much better than KB.

Out of the list I'd say Tarantino though I'm really surprised you forgot to list Peter Jackson, Robert Rodriguez and the Coen Brothers.

Also Michael Mann and Spike Lee are fantastic directors whose films such as Heat, Last of the Mohicans, ManHunter, Malcolm X, Clockers, 25th Hour and Summer of Sam are fantastic films

Peter JAckson is to commercial for my liking. I guess I should have included him anyways for the sake of the list though.

None of them(with the exception of Sin City) are really any good, and most critics agree with that.

and the Coen Brothers.
The problem was I posted "Director", NOT "Directors". I know it's stupid but still.

Sorry mate, Michael Mann started out in the 70's, so doesn't really count. Plus most of his mouvies aren't that good.

and Spike Lee
I don't like Spike Lee, he's made some really crappy films, so I don't think he should be included. Not only that but most critics would say he had his best work in the 80's which makes him an older director IMO.

I hope you're not saying these directors are better the PT Anderson or David Fincher(who is the absolute best after Tarantino IMO).

With Michael Mann most of his best films came out in the mid-eighties and nineties so i thought i would put him down. For me he is one of the best but underated directors.

With RR Dusk till dawn, once upon a time in Mexico and Desperado are real favs of mine. Insane but i i can't help but love them

You have to see some of Jacksons earlier works as well as Braindead and Bad Taste are simply sick and great.

I like some of Finchers work, Seven and Fight Club being my favs, i also enjoyed the Game, quite a clever film.

I agree on some of Lee's films but honestly the 25th hour and summer of sam are amazing films. If you haven't seen them check them out.

PT Anderson? I only enjoyed Boogie Nights, he did magnolia as well didn't he? Not my cup of tea to be honest.

I don't like horror movies, but i appreciate his use of camera work in the LOTR trilogy.

I freaken love everything about Fight Club. The cinematography, the editing, the CG techniques(that look very realistic might I add), the direction, the acting. Not one thing went wrong. I liked Seven a lot, it was very dark. The Game was good, but it had inconsistences that came with the script, can't really blame the director.

PT Anderson? I only enjoyed Boogie Nights, he did magnolia as well didn't he? Not my cup of tea to be honest.
I have yet to see Magnolia too, very soon i will. I liked his camera work in Boogie Nights. The character development was excellent as well. Overall it showed real talent.

BTW may I recommend you watch Wong Kar Wai films. He's an amazing director. You might not like the love stories though, so I don't know.

I agree with Ronin - Kevin Smith should be on the list. He's never done anything I didn't like, including appearing on Degrassi Junior High.

Tarantino's not bad, I guess, but all of his movies are tributes, which kind of makes him a hack...and kind of doesn't.

i wouldn't call pulp fiction a tribute.. but tbh, pulp fiction was by far his best movie (it's one of the greatest movies of the 90s) and i'm not super excited by the rest of his work (though i need to watch reservoir dogs again).

as far as kevin smith goes.. i don't really get it. clerks was the only really good movie he's done. dogma was OK, but nothing special (maybe i need to be a catholic to really appreciate it). mallrats was.. not great.. and neither was jay and silent bob strike back. both were occasionally funny, but neither are even especially good comedies. chasing amy was OK also, probably better than dogma, but nothing outstanding. never saw jersey girl.


and all of that is imo, of course.

Yeah the writing is clever and hillarious but his skill as a director is not exactly brilliant. Sorry to difer with you mate.

Well he blends various B movies he's seen in his youth(I heard he watched 3 movies a day) with the style of Godard but creates something completely original. I definetly see a lot of influences sure, but that doesn't make him a hack since none of those movies are as good as his most of the time, IMO.
