Each Roman faction gets 1 type of Gladiator to build and that's your lot matey. But forget those overpaid slaves - stick with peasants!

thanks....i thought i could train all 3 of them
i dont recruit the any gladiators i just stick with urban cohort
But in the early stages of the game, before Marians, gladiators are yumyum.

Gladiators are useful, they (along iwth Arcani) are the only two hit point units that the romans can train. 2 hit point units are extrememly useful under some circumstances.Originally Posted by Centurion Officer

They are also resistant of cavalry charge due to 2HP.

And velite glads have that really good bonus against ele's and chariots.

You'll never need Gladiators if you have Urban Cohorts.
well you can get velite and samnite glads before you can get urbans - velite only need an arena and samnites with an amphitheater , so if you like gladiators you can use them far before you can built urbans, only the mirmillo glads are really overshadowed by the urbans , since you can only get mirmillo's once you built a colosseum.
I agree though I like urbans better and use them more ( well not anymore with RTR) glads make a welcome edition to any army.

Didn't we just cover this? I'll accept this when you show me the Urban Cohort that has two hit points...Originally Posted by Garvanko
Like some dude above me said, Glads are very good when attacking walls. Well, except for the Velite Glads They are just useful for their spears.
the only time i use gladiators is in mass. if i don't have any urbans but 4 cities with colleseums then i built 4 gladiators. and in battle i mass them all in a solid block and charge them twards the most steadfast enemies, the tear threw um really well.

I have ever bothered using glads in the game, i prefer my legions. I have only used them in custom battles where they are a decent flanking force.
Marmillo from behind : )
If i ever played as brutii i would used velite though, i just can't deal with chariots and they might be the answer i was looking for
I build a gladiator unit in big cities just because they were there historically. They can defend the city and put down rebels. I seldom campaign with them but they do add color.
Time flies like the wind. Fruit flies like bananas.
Gladiator's also seem to be great cushions to ranged attacks. Their high armor and 2 hp make them rather good at survival, and all archers seem to target them. Not to mention their huge moral always seems to keep them in the battle.
that seems like a waste of good gladiators to me![]()

Anyway. Gladiators are good in cities because of their loose order, their 2 HP and their awesome fighting skills. (We're talking pre-Marian here.) They're beyond anything the Hastati or Principes can give you. I always take along a unit or two of gladiators of whatever Roman faction I am, and I use them liberally.

I wonder how they do against other 2HP units like Bull Warriors and Spartans, not too well I would imagine.

I find gladiators very useful in taking any city.
In a custom battle with wooden walls:
break the wall however you please, send in one group of fully upgraded gladiators followed by 2 groups of fully upgraded urban cohorts, followed by most of your other ground troops. Through another hole in the wall, you send in your cavalry and break your enemy.
