If I remember correctly, someone said that if you can bribe another Roman factions gladiators to your side and they won't disband.

I find gladiators very useful in taking any city.

In a custom battle with wooden walls:

break the wall however you please, send in one group of fully upgraded gladiators followed by 2 groups of fully upgraded urban cohorts, followed by most of your other ground troops. Through another hole in the wall, you send in your cavalry and break your enemy.
