Well, I`ve come to the conviction that there are a great many psychatrists out there that shouldn`t be trusted with handling a tea pot, left alone a mentally unstable person. The article is right that psychatry is big business. The problem is that a psychatrist can always make more money from diagnose someone as ill than as normal. And since there are no x-ray photos to show mental abnormalities on, there`s always room for interpretation. Unfortunately, psychatry is still a young discipline and there are few good, scientific ways who`s right and who`s wrong.
Though, one objection I have to make: why is it unbelievable that 50% of all Americans will develope a mental illness in their lifetime? After all, also 50% of all Americans will get cancer, even more cardiologic diseases. Depression, anxiety disorders, tics, phobias, learning and eating disorders are all quite common. Not to forget dementia. And that you don`t notice many people to have them doesn`t mean much.
