    Default Rip off Britain.

So after the terrorist attacks, with at least 50 people dead and 20 in hospital with critical injuries. A time for solidarity, for helping one's fellow man. Of course many people have done this, helping with getting the medical supplies to the scene and so on, but not these people.........

Interesting mix of some hoteliers raising prices, and others giving 'free rooms until 6pm' or dropping cancellation charges.
I'd like to know whether it was chains raising prices and independents assisting people or vice versa.

Disgusting, it shows how shallow and heartless the private sector can be to simply get their profit as big as possible.

It was the same private sector that offered up free rooms and cancellations to people. Are there greedy entrepreneurs out there? Sure. Is it disgusting when they pull crap like this? You bet. But rather than just talking about possibly naming them, why didn't the BBC actually name those 'local hotels' and let capitalism fix it's own woes. If word got out a hotel did this, they may as well close down. Nobody would stay there again.

Some entrepreneurial genius (aka assistant manager at a Starbucks) got the bright idea to gouge the rescue workers at Ground Zero, charging them 10 bucks for a bottle of water. When word of it got out, Starbucks 1) fired the responsible party and 2) to save face, arranged for free water and coffee for the rest of the cleanup operation.

It's a two way street. Use it both ways.

They will be remembered. And woe unto them for memories of things like this are long.

During the Great Quebec Ice Storm of '98, when hundreds and hundreds of thousands were without power in the middle of winter, freezing in the dark for several weeks, and the entire island of Montreal was very nearly evacuated, some stores raised prices a great deal. Others didn't. People here still remember who was good and who was bad.

The human capacity for greed and insensitivity never ceases to amaze me.

Doesn't the UK have laws against this form of crisis based price gouging? In the US people are prosecuted for this sort of flagrant price gouging.

So this is why all of the buildings in Britain are built of stone and briscks, rather than wood, so that they can be rented for a higher price?

No, it's just so damp here that wood rots away in a couple of years.
