They were looking for evidence of an ancient Aryan nation/civilization there.

They went to Tibet to find the remains of the European (probably Celtic) civilisation that once inhabitted the region. There is eveidence, such as burials, skeletons, clothing items (tartans), similarities in art (eg the 'swastika' design) etc. to suggest that Celtic peoples migrated eastward and settled the Xinjiang and Tibettan areas and were quite possibly the ancestors of the Indo-European Tocharian civilisation; some even theorise that the Celts laid the foundations of Buddhism (but I'm a bit skeptical).

The Tocharians maintained the 'Silk Road' between East and West. They had contact with the Chinese, Persians, Iranians, Turks and Indians (from whom their alphabet is derived, and contributed to China's adoption of Buddhism. The Tocharians are reported to have had Red and Blonde hair and Blue and Green eyes, and Oriental art clearly depicts them as White, which is perhaps an explanation as to why certain Asiatic Steppe people, such as Genghis Kahn, are reported to have sometimes had Red hair and Green eyes.

Ah yes, I seem to remember hearing something about this.

If I remember correctly from my high school anthropology classes, Indians are technically "Aryan".

Well it was, it was a people that conquered India, created the caste system and placed themself at top. Spoke a Indo-Europeian languge.

The Nazi myth was that the hole Indo-Europeian language-group came from more or less the same people (a superior people that is) that conquered from India to Great Britain, and by some reason ended up "purest" in northern Europe. As the only proof for this conclution was the Aryans in India, it ended up as the name for this (in the Nazi's eyes) superior people.

Might I just be a brain in a tank somewhere, tricked all my life into believing in the events of this world by some insane computer? And does my life gain or lose meaning based on my reaction to such solipsism?

From what I read, Aryan is a quite-heretic branch of orthodoxism....

Nazis in Tibet...quite extreme if you ask me....

Celtic would have been unlikely. More likely they were Iranian (who were related and similar looking to the Celts), as the Tocharians were similar looking to Iranians. We're not sure if they were Iranian or spoke an Iranian language, but they might have been related.
Oh, and the Asatic steppe nomads with lighter complexions would have likely come from Scythians and other Iranian peoples.

No there was a tribe of celts (or germans) who moved east across the central asian steppe to the outskirts of the taklumakan desert. They found graves with 6 foot, red an blonde haired men who's skulls had distinctly nortern european features. Who were wearing cloaks or tartans with a celtic type green and brown pattern on it. Plus the rest of his cloths were celtic or germanic in design. And it wasn't just some people there is evidence of them being there for quite a few generations with no contact with other groups of people.
