    Cool Prince Albert assumes throne

    From CNN.com

MONACO (AP) -- Prince Albert II of Monaco officially became the ruler of this tiny Riviera principality in a celebration that began with a solemn Mass at the cathedral where his father, Rainier III, was buried three months ago.

Albert automatically took royal powers upon the death of his father but formally embraced his role as His Serene Highness on Tuesday.

His accession to the throne is a two-step event with another ceremony expected to draw heads of state planned for November 19.

Wearing a dark suit and sky blue tie, a grave-looking Albert, his two sisters, Princess Caroline and Princess Stephanie, and other members of the royal family assisted at the Mass celebrated by the archbishop of Monaco, Monsignor Bernard Barsi. They sat beside the altar.

Organ music set the solemn tone for a day to end with fireworks and a festive ball under the stars, to the tune of Pink Floyd and U2.

The Little Singers of Monaco, the Monaco Philharmonic Orchestra, trumpets and soprano solos added to the somber but gracious scene inside the flower-bedecked white stone cathedral.

The 47-year-old bachelor prince is the only son of Prince Rainier and actress Grace Kelly, who gave up Hollywood for the life of a princess before dying in a car crash in 1982.

Shops were closed and banners of red and white -- the national colors -- bedecked the palace and windows around Monaco, a rocky Mediterranean enclave next to Nice, France.

Hundreds of Monegasques, decked out in fineries and fancy hats, packed the stone cathedral near the royal palace.

"I remember Albert's birth. We've seen him grow up," Christine Rousguisto, 79, said ahead of the Mass.

Albert, often portrayed as shy and retiring, has the confidence of Monaco's citizenry.

"Of course, he's ready for this. He has everything to be a wonderful prince," said Rousguisto.

At the close of the 75-minute service, Albert donned his sunglasses and walked with his sisters to the nearby palace for a garden party.

International recognition of Albert's reign started arriving in Monaco with President Jacques Chirac of France inviting him to Paris in September.

"Your reign inaugurates the coming of new relations between our two countries," said Chirac.

Secretive about his personal life, Albert has been more forthcoming since his father's death.

On the day Monaco's official mourning period ended last week, he confirmed news reports that he fathered a child out of wedlock with an African-born flight attendant.

In a last-minute surprise before formally embracing the role of His Serene Highness, Albert told France's TF1 television Monday night that there may be others waiting to step forward with paternity claims.

Asked to elaborate, he refused, saying only: "We will answer when the moment comes."

In publicly acknowledging he is the father of a nearly two-year-old child, Alexandre, Albert said he wanted to face up to his responsibilities.

His son, he said, will want for nothing, though he will never take the throne and will not bear the Grimaldi family name.

Monaco's constitution was revised in 2002 to circumvent the problem his bachelor status created for the line of succession.

The change allows power to pass from a reigning prince who has no descendants to his siblings, but forbids illegitimate children from acceding to the throne.

"He's a modern prince," said pharmacist Marie-Paule Velay, decked out in a pale yellow hat.

"He acted honorably," she said, pointing out that he recognized the child soon after his birth.

The prince, whose bachelorhood caused consternation to his father, has said he plans to marry one day and father legitimate heirs eligible for the throne -- but only when he is ready.
    I love Monaco.....

if they had to revise the constitution in 2002 so that the succession would pass to his sibling if he was heirless, what was the succession plan before then? it seems pretty straightforward to me that it would go to his siblings if he didn't have a legitimate heir. so has it been father-son transmission only there for the last 700 years [highly unlikely] and it never occured to them that it might someday be otherwise?
    indeed

Before 2002, only the males of the line could succed to the throne. If they're were no heirs left, the principlaity would be annexed by France.

Wow...so if they couldn't find an heir to the throne then they would would lose their sovereignty. I'm not surprised they changed the constitution!

It would probably be better for if they were annexed by France.

I guess I should explain that better since many people don't seem to know the prank anymore/ever....

Prince Albert is a brand of pipe tobacco sold by John Middleton, Inc. The brand gained widespread recognition, perhaps infamously, due to the classic prank call, where the caller asks if the store has 'Prince Albert in a can' and when the unexpecting clerk responds 'yes', the caller follows up with 'you better let him out, because he is suffocating!' Despite this negative publicity, Prince Albert is one of the more popular independent brands of tobacco in the US. More recently, it has also become available in the form of pipe-tobacco cigars.

Hah! I didn't know that! And here I thought you were invoking two classic American slang terms for toilet; 'throne' and 'can'... thus my 'crap' reference.

    I just love potty humor...
