Default Is there any peaceful way to take provinces from allies?

I had a pretty slow start on my campaign playing as the Julii. By the time I conquered the Iberian Peninsula, the Scipii had take all of NE Africa. Is there any way to convince them to give me their provinces or a peaceful way to take them? Does bribing work on allies? Is bribing considered hostile activity? I don't want to start a whole new campaign. This isn't required either. It would just make things easier during the civil war, which will be coming pretty soon.

Not sure if bribing is allowed. I do know that you can sometimes buy cities. Demand a city and offer a payment for it.

Also you might want to offer one of your cities along with a substantial cash incentive for several of the cities you want; if they refuse you can then reduce the amount bit by bit until they accept.

It seems like bribing won't work against other Roman factions. I tried on a number of towns some containing only captains and the option wasn't there. It has worked on my other alllies though and they never went hostile either. Looks like I'll have to go to civil war to get those provinces.

You have to be offered to cease the power in order to bribe other romans even if you do not start the war right away you'll be able to bribe them.

Diplomacy before the civil war, bribery after. Trade citites to the other romans for their cities that you want, just make sure that you have a close by garrison force to keep it.

If you bribe a roman city while playing a roman faction , you will recieve a message from the Senate to give it back ( like a mission )

yes, as far as I know that was fixed in v1.2 due to players bribing whole armies of other Romans (possible also thanks to ridiculous bribing cost back then) and using them for expansion in the same direction as the former owner intended, thus crippling their fellow Romans to an extent that the term "civil war" became absurd for the skirmishes at the end of the game. This worked especially well with the Brutii due to the tons of cash they are able to rake in quickly.
Since the AI tends to be reluctant to make concessions once you've become mighty, peacefully taking over cities in the middle/late game without a horrible price is quite impossible IMHO. To get them "peacefully" nonetheless, be sure enough to capture them before your friendly soon-to-be enemies can: that is, in the earlier game stages....
just start the civil war once you're in a somewhat favorable strategic position and have placed all your armies properly. Take all the cities you want from them! With a quick strike one of your enemies will almost be dead within two turns.

To get a province from an ally without going to war you have to buy it. It will cost you though. Probably in the neighborhood of 10000 denarii.

How is this done? There's no option to bribe for Roman factions. I was able to bribe from all my other allies except the Roman factions. I know I can trade my own provinces for there's but I am trying to increase my territory not just make it look different.

In the diplomancy menu under make demand there is an option called give region that's it. You select it then the city you want, you can't get the factions capitol though.

Also if you Roman buying from Roman the senate may get it's panties in a knot about it and demand you give it back.

it is more difficult with the roman factions, but as the julii, i once bought a distant province from the brutii

when demanding a city from an ally, if they don't have it already, offer them map information and trade rights as well as cash.

seriously, do you, my fellow posters, have real success in that? Whenever I want to "buy" a city, it

    a) has to be in the early game stages or they refuse outrightly no matter what I offer....in reasonable boundaries, i.e. I won't give up 3 provinces for 1, and

    b) the price is usually horrible. not 10.000, more towards 100.000 denarii. For an average settlement, that is. Is there a way to lower these rates for it really doesn't pay of this way?

You may try to incite a revolt and then take the city from the rebels.

I do all the time, but I alter the game to start with 5 million denarii with what ever faction I'm playing as. And change it too 10000 or 50000 when starting another. I also cahnged all the civilized factions militia infantry units to have a build time of 0 (meaning you can build 9 in 1 turn) and have 120 men in a unit.

You can get a city for 10000 but the faction has to be in dire financial straits to let one go for that little. The AI has a simple philosophy on this sort of thing. "If they want it they're gonna pay, ohhhh how they're gonna pay."
