Thread: Wanted: history buff with some time

Attention all Monasterians:

barocca is seeking some new web content for the Org. He is looking for some patrons willing to do write-ups on the Historical Battles in RTW. Who better to do this than the History nuts here in the Monastery? The write-up should include some historical information on key events leading up to the battle, a description of the battle itself and then a walkthru of fighting the battle in RTW. Screenshots and battle maps from the game would be a very nice addition the write-up.

So, anyone interested?

I'n interested....

But it depends on what battles, barocca....
If you want for Gaugamela or other battles, yes....
If they are more complicated, question mark for me because I will doubt I will find any info.....

But hey, I always liked history.... I should be able to find......

But the question is, what do you want to say with: Walkthru of fighting the battle in RTW?! I have to do the battle and tell what have I done?!
And also: Screenshots and maps.... From the battle that I played?! Or from what really happened?!

Cheers!

What about posting the battles here. Then people can respond to the battles they think they can handle.

My ancient history is a bit weak, but I would be willing to something for MTW.

Perhaps the best approach for selecting a battle would be to load (vanilla) RTW and give the Historical Battles a try. Pick one that seems interesting to play and let us know here in this thread which battle you propose to do - we don't want 10 people doing the same battle. Then go to work. What I would suggest is that you do a rough outline or draft and then PM it to bar to make sure what you are doing is what he had in mind. Does that make sense?

Also, for the actual historical part, keep track of where you got the information if you used books or web sites as references. You should acknowledge any sources you used.

The end result, thousands of men died that day over a piece of dirt.

:-)

the battle as history saw it,
+
mayhaps a little (like a couple paragraphs) of what led to it,
+
then how it plays out in RTW, what you think of it, if you lost and dont want to replay it, what you may do differently next time.

a few screenshots from RTW would be nice,
nothing too fancy
(a walkthrough to winning if you can, not essential)

if you wanted to add a map and pics from historical soures that would be good too

how deep you go is entirely up to you
:-)

IE Teutonberg,
what i do in Teutonberg is
Initial Ambush
keep my archers from getting into H2H,
try to target the best of your units on the closest BIG bad guys,
keep your general out of it for the moment,
once all the enemy are enaged get your archers FORWARDS, with the general and any infantry not engaged,
not too far, just over the little rise in front of you,
make sure your archers are back on fire at will.
do NOT persue the enemy, stay together
as the second wave come in (tease them into moving with your general if you have to) get your infantry back into ordrer and advance them through your archers (turn off fire at will as a unit moves through an archer - dont want to shoot your own men, you'll need them)

Second wave is a little tougher, your men are tired

third wave comes in as you move forwards into the second wave,
again try to use your men wisely, maximum impact, gang up on them
DO NOT PANIC
DO NOT PERSUE
you can get the bulk of your force into the camp if you can take the germans as they come for you piecemeal
keep at least 2 units in reserve in case you have "missed' an enemy unit

rotate units in and out of reserve to rest them
keep moving towards the camp
(etc etc - i have forgotten the end game, i remember flanking archers and "pushing" them into my infantry using the General)

after saying that i am going offline to actually play it!!

I would be interested (however, I fear that I cannot provide the screenshots, as I am unable to view them, no matter)
I also recently acquired numerous books about Caeser, Alexander, and a couple more!

I'm accounted a good historian-storyteller. Would gladly take this on.

I am not a good story teller and my English is poor. But there are some battles I still remember, so count me in.
Pez, maybe we can work together?

Count me in! I've got something about teamwork with Franconicus. I specialise in ancient and modern (from Napoleon onwards) battles, but am very weak in the medieval/middle ages battles, except for the key ones.

Alright, how do we get the battle? When do we start?
I am waiting

Yeah me too... let's get started! I want to do some storytelling.

Oh you mean we pick our own battles to write about? If that's the case I hereby announce that I will be, for my first attempt, writing on the battle of Arbela/Gaugamela.

How do we submit our work?

If we can pick our own battle, I think I want Teutoberg Forest.

edyzmedieval and pezhetairoi,

can we start right away? Gaugamela is fine to me. (I still remember Alex on his horse when he spoke to his men). Well, this battle is very well known. Won't be too difficult.

Maybe we start a new thread, where we can put everything together. I guess we start withthe history and story follows.

Should we ask IliaDn to join?

Franc, this sounds good! But I don't think it's right to take up Org server space (or whatever it is... bandwidth, memory, whatever) for just the three of us and one thread... what say we team up and I'll start a private egroup? If you say okay, just PM me with your email, yep?

Maybe we could make this team permanent and start churning out battle stories from all eras... Starting with Gaugamela... we could move on to, I don't know... Hastings? Or something. But that's for the future. :) For now... Gaugamela!

What say you start putting together the events leading up to the battle, including Darius' movements? I have a diagram of the precise dispositions and the conduct of the battle so I'll deal with the nitty-gritty of the battle, e.g. unit movements.

Of course, RTW walkthroughs may be...difficult to do :-\ Maybe it can be done, but it takes quite a bit of engineering... Gee, this is like writing a screenplay and directing the thing :-P

taking up org space is more than welcome,
we have no restrictions on space or bandwidth

Out of topic - Barocca , what are the differences between the (one?) administrator (you) and the moderators ? (you even have a unique color)
