He's got a good point. I was drunk taking a ride home on the Tokyo subway one time. Some girl was totally plastered and could barely walk. The conductor dragged her off the train, and I shit you not, dropped her into the wastebasket. When I tried to help her, everyone started speaking quickly in Japanese (most Japanese don't speak English, or at least not very well) and finally one guy walked up and said "She is in shame. You should leave here there". Well, my apologies to the Japanese, but that wasn't the way this red blooded American boy was raised. But that's not a slam on the Japanese. This happens in America A LOT too, and at least the Japanese have a reason, grated a bad one. Americans just do it because either we're afraid or we think it's funny. Have we lost any sense of charity and being a samaritan?

Yup the Japanese have a sense of honor thats hard for a westerner to understand. Can you imagine what would happen to a Muslim woman in some radical Islamic nation in this situtation?

Gah, I'm starting to get very scared. I keep on agreeing with Don! (Though thank goodnes I can still disagree over somethings )
But I don't understand why people would act so meanly. So what if someone's drunk? Nothing wrong with that, and they'll pay for it in the morning most likely. No reason to be mean and shun them...

No, I'm not mocking you. Easy on the vodka big guy, I'm agreeing with you. We have drifted too far in terms of helping our fellow people and need to move back towards helping other people out. I agree completely.

You should be more afraid than you know. When I was your age, I was more liberal than you in many ways. You have 'white knight' syndrome, and as you age, you'll come to see you've hoisted your banner in the wrong camp. Until then, we'll keep making allowances for you.

Actually, Kangemusha's got a point. While rendering aid is considered the noble and honorable thing to do in America, in Finland it would be barbaric to pass up the opportunity to help somebody (which is how they see it). I strongly suspect sometimes between the drinking, the loving the outdoors, the good head for electronics, and the dedication to helping out those I know, I must be a changeling, snatched from Finland. The only thing that makes me doubt it is that I'm very chatty. That would never go in Suomi.

    Animals with AIDS?

Well, it´s nice of you to help her and there shouldn´t be any problem with AIDS as long as you aren´t injured, but to some degree those peoples` concerns were correct, as sad as this may sound.

I think also that whats wrong with todays world is everybody is too afraid.Im not a good Christian but i think those Christian values are not bad if we could ever follow those values.I personally believe in fate ,but not passivly.I think we all have our faith but we can do the best of it.So im not a true Christian but i believe in god because i think God is us all.God is everyone and just someone when needed.

Given what you guys did against Russia in the Winter War I think it could be argued that about you guys being heroes! Brave or crazy, but sane people would have said hands up against those kind of odds.

I think society is getting colder and meaner every year because we spend too much time on the internet, watching TV, or video's and we get unrealistic idea's about what people are. Technology has made this easier than ever before and we have contrasting idealistic views of people being both much better and much worse than they really are. We are disappointed when people fail to meet such high expectations, just as the equally unrealistically dark portrayals seem confirmed. We are aware that the people we know are not like this but the expectations exist nevertheless.

A selfish disregard for others is promoted in popular music and corporate advertising, largely as a means to sell products. The sense that we are all part of something greater is fading. We become more self-obsessed and less compassionate to others as electronic entertainment becomes an ever greater part of our lives.

These electronic relationships can be terminated at the touch of a button. Real life however is never so convenient. Real relationships take time, effort, and are sometimes simply boring. Listening to your friend gripe about his girlfriend for the 10th time this week can hardly compare to MTW, or reality TV. And all this is obtained at minimal cost, minimal time, and is on call to entertain you when and how you want.

Then something happens and we are called upon to act as human beings and we are confused, retreating into selfishness because that has always worked before.
"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."
    -- John Stewart Mills

I think that technology has everything, and nothing to do with society at all. Technology has distanced us from the Community Model of earlier societies, but it hasn't distanced us that much. I think we are distancing ourselves from the community model because it has lost it's relative importance, and also from fear and mistrust of people outside of the core. Being a business man myself, I have to interact with a lot of people everyday, doesn't mean that I want to, I could care less about the majority of the people I have met. I think the demands of our economy, and our lifestyles dictate how much we care about anyone else, a lot of people are so self centered on their own well being that they've forgotten to care about anyone else, thats why our population is in decline, crime rate is rising, and people are afraid of their own futures more than the futures of the people around them. Japan is facing such a critical decrease in birth rates, that the government has actually decreased the maximum amount of hours that a person is capable of working so that a person can spend more time with his wife, or meet someone new, so people start reproducing. I don't know what I would have done in such an instance personally, I wouldn't be afraid of contracting AIDS, because I know that I haven't had sex with that person, or shared a drug needle (which is about the only two ways a person can get AIDS). I would have helped her out of the bus, and maybe escorted her to a hospital, but I probably wouldn't help beyond that.

I thought that most countries had laws that forced us all to help out in emergencies. I might confuse that with traffic accidents though....

    As to the original post...

This girl obviously went out and got herself drunk, and didnt have the personal responsibility it takes to make sure if you plan to get drunk you do it in a safe environment.

Call me heartless, but if a drunken stranger fell over and hurt her head and was bleeding all over the place, i would call for professional help and not touch her. She very well could have AIDS or any number of other illnesses.

Now if she was unconscious, i would probably feel obligated to help her and worry my ass off until I got tested for everything under the sun.

We dont live in villages anymore where everyone knows everyone else.. there are some dirty people out there and a good sign of this would be public drunkenness.

Spoken like a true Christian Conservative PJ! Good to see the hardcore 'moral' Christian Conservatives know how to look after one and all, with God and all that.

It is terrible how some people can ignore those in need, even if the problems they are in are caused by their own choices.

But should we really be that surprised? Our whole culture in the developed world is to take, take, take and not care for anyone bar yourself, the market doesn't respond and take into account anything else! The thought of helping others in the community and 'giving' would screw our system up totally!

I consider it a moral obligation to help those in need, and I would feel ashamed if I didn’t.

And I know this because years ago, while driving in convoy, my vehicle passed an elderly couple, the man was lying on the ground, and the woman was looking utterly distressed. I asked for the driver to stop, but he refused. I still think about what happened to that man, and if I could have helped.

Well I for one don't agree that it our duty to help anyone that seems to need it. I think you have to judge every case when you come to it.

For instance, as any first aider will tell you the first thing you are taught when dealing with bleeding wounds is to put gloves on. Now if we take the case of the young girl who hurt herself because she drank a bit too much then I would say that the answer is obvious, you help her but you take a much care doing it as you can, if it's a bang on the head there's not much chance of catching aids from it if you're careful. On the other hand what if the person had a syringe hanging out of their arm and it was a bit more bloody than a split head would you still be duty bound to help. I would say no, the risk of aids is far higher as well the fact that there would be no nookie until you found out, if you did have it then the odds are you're going to die, and you wouldn't be able to have kids or you would sentence them to death as well, leaving the wife as a widow.

Not quite as black and white now!

As for there being laws forcing you to help, not here, and hopefully not ever, at least not until there's laws against people suing you if things go wrong, like the guy who sued the person who gave him CPR because they broke a couple of ribs, now that's callous.

Some have said that yes. Philosophical anarchism, not the image it has got from the 'anarchists' you see in the press.

I'd help the girls. It's not totally their faults, maybe they didn't know how much alchohol they could handle? In any case, I'm not *that* evil as to stand by and watch some innocent, young, probably single girl bleed or get hurt without helping. If she has AIDs, well, so what? I'll risk it. I don't plan on living very long anyway, and I'd most likely go out in a blaze of glory before the AIDs took full effect. Plus, as the Torah says, and I quote from Memory, 'The one who saves one life, saves the life of the world entire.' If I can save one person's life, that's all it takes. Even if the wound doesn't look serious, it can always be life threatening. Always.
Panzer, you never fail to amaze me, usually in a good way. But, judging by the fact that you have some of the strongest morals I've seen on this forum, I'd think you'd be the first to help. I can see your logic, but really, I wouldn't be so paranoid about deseases. Also, in regards to the drunk in public, I've been drunk (to a certain degree) in public before, does that mean I'm a dirty person?
JAG, I'm willing to bet you'd be the first person off the scene. Oh, and your Christian Conservative remarks are very offensive. You can argue that I'm more conservative and fanatically Christian than Panzer, but I do not share the beleif that he has in this area. It would be like me saying that you support the Stalinist Purges and the Genocides in Rwanda and the Sudan, just because you are a part of the leftist branch of society.

Where is the basis for this? Why do you think I would be 'first off the scene'? Quite amazing considering I have stated I would help.

First off, no where did you state that you would help. Second, due to your political leanings and some of the things you have brought up in debates I am forced to beleive that you are a liar, and third, I couldn't pass up an oppertunity to insult you in response to your christian conservative remarks. How does it feel?
