    The govt chose to do it, because the public perception at the time was that it was best not left to the market. You seem to be having trouble with cause and effect.

    "Government" is not equal to "market" Much of the infrastructure of this country would never have been built relying solely on private industry. It took various levels of govt using public funds to build or encourage the building of much of it. This seems to be largely lost on those today who have inherited a fine infrastructure...but little sense of history.

    It is of course up to the nation to decide whether or not a program is worth funding, but to try to claim what you did above is disingenuous.

    The government 'chose' to surpass its mandate.

    You appear to be attempting a historical argument. My position is not based on the folly of the past. It is based on the proper role of government. Tax monies spent on irrelevancies is not the government's purview.
