I'd have to go for the Roman armour: nice and shiny.

But the Napoleonic era had some good uniforms too.

I'm going to have to agree with Gawain on the Napoleonic Era. Probably the last 'fancy-war'.

Let me think. I like nice and colorful uniforms. Napoleonic had nice uniforms. I like a lot of the Turkish inspired clothing of the later Byzantines and Hungarians, and the Turks themselves. Not sure if it's a uniform however.

Those Redcoats and Highlanders look ****ing WICKED! But Prussian c1780 uniforms and German late Medieval armour looks awesome. Rome probably had the best Ancient uniform armies. And didn't the Assyrian and Persian armies have uniform clothes and weapons?
Screw style!
I am all for practicality so I would have to go with now, most likely the awesome suits worn by the Snipers. Not as flexible as most, but they can place brush and vegetation in it for the ultimate camoflauge!
That and the awesome uniforms worn by a lot of WWII marines in the Pacific. The one that was tan and sort of a desert like uniform. It just looks cool and probably was helpful on some of the sandier islands and on the beaches.

Cavalry was uniforms were pretty awesome around the Civil War and the late 1800s. I'm pretty sure they were inspired by the Hussars of Europe, or at least some of the European cavalry's style.
I like the Phyrigian helm...![]()
Eh, I don't think the Persians did. They came from so many parts of the world, the warriors almost always fought as they would at home, with their own styles of dress. And didn't the Assyrian and Persian armies have uniform clothes and weapons?

Anyone know who was the first army to issue fatigues. It seems most early armys had only the uniforms they fought in as far as enlisted men or the common solier goes.

I´ve got a nice book with a lot of paintings of medieval armour, I love especially the gothic armour and other kinds of full plate. I´d like to scan some nice paintings, but I´m not sure about copyright violations.
If it was for real uniforms, it would probably one of a modern army, those white US NAVY uniforms for formal things are looking very nice for example.

Blah. No uniform goes well with skin heads, IMO.

The Napoleonic era gets top marks from me. The uniforms of that era may have been colorful and stylish but they also exhibited a greater degree of practicality and self control on the part of the tailors. This draws a stark contrast to the outright pretentiousness and frivolity that plagued European uniforms in every age since the Renaissance. The uniforms from the ages of Reason and Enlightenment get especially low marks... would you care for some more plumage milord? Ugh.
A close second would be the Classical/Hellenic & Roman era uniforms. I love the wild and contrasting appearance of the Persian Immortals, Greek hoplites, Skythian horsemen, Parthian cataphracts, Macedonian Companion cavalry, Roman legionaries, etc.

I say the knights templar outfit.
My fav is quite simply WWII.
Why? It has bland colours, ugly helmets, no sleek lines and so...
Well, it all comes down to a few types of uniform, all German.
First the black SS uniform is slick. It was meant for a security formation for Hitler and was supposed to look good for that reason. It certainly did. To top it off it was practical.
The panzer uniform is very much similar, but more stylish rather than slick. Also it has a streak of robustness. The black uniform with its silver edges simply makes me shudder, add a few decorations and it is absolutely stunning. Again it is likely made with show in mind (Hitler loved to show off and goodlooking soldiers always pleased him greatly), but this time it had to be able to be used in very cramped and nasty environments.
The StuG uniform, derived from the artillery uniform is lightgrey (much lighter than the Feldgrau of infantry troops), but very similar to the panzer uniform in sturdiness. A headturner really.
But the phalangite was in my mind also a stunning warrior, especially the Thracian variants were cool. But the cavalry with their plumed Boiotian helmets were nice too.
Argh... Too many really.
But it is interesting to me that only Germans bothered to create really nice uniforms. Possibly the others didn't think that nice looks and down-to-the-business sort of action went well together. I can just imagine some general going "Damn! I want warriors, not heartbreakers! Make it more bland!"
You may not care about war, but war cares about you!
Not surprisingly, German uniforms of WW1 and WW2 are a thing of beauty to me. I particularly like the late uniforms used in WW2, excellent camo. Also the officer dress was very stylish..![]()

Heres a picture of it. One of my favorite pictures actually..The panzer uniform is very much similar, but more stylish rather than slick. Also it has a streak of robustness. I agree with you panzer.I also think that Germans had the most good looking uniforms in WWII.![]()
Ja Mata Tosainu Sama.
Ahhh Michael Wittman. He knew how to look good at pictures. I only know one bad picture of him.
That one is very good indeed, perfect for the uniformshot (but I believe that the SS panzertroops actually wore a stronger version of the SS uniform, rather than the regular panzer uniform).
My favorite ofhim is actually the shot where he is discussing with his other tank commanders in the field, showing great determination and concentration as he speaks to them from a slightly bowed position looking up. Those eyes seems to pierce the lense eventhough he isn't looking at it.
But honestly, while the normal Feldgrau was a lot nicer than any of the other countries put in the field (especially Japan) it was a far cry from good looking. It was functional and that it did well, looks were best when not there.
It is the three I mentioned earlier that takes the cake for me.
You may not care about war, but war cares about you!
How can you like any war uniform past the Plains Wars? Any soldier that has short hair, and drab colors is just boring. The hats are dumb, they color is always a variation of grey, and no bright colors or feathers or anything.
And too me, the weapon is also very important. A cavalry saber is way cooler than a machine gun.![]()

Well its really just opinion. I think those late war uniforms with the standard German helmet look awesome, and the officers look like true warlords.
To be honest, I think some of those napoleonic uniforms look quite goofy.![]()
Didn't mean to be insulting or anything. Wait, is the helm that funky one with the spike? Cause that is pretty awewsome, IMO...![]()

I conccurr in saying that German officer's uniforms were the best along with certain during the Napoleonic era. Only officers though.

Do you mean the Prussian Pickelhaube helmet? Yeah that did look pretty cool and I guess as a pratical use, it would be pretty nasty if you headbutted someone with one.Didn't mean to be insulting or anything. Wait, is the helm that funky one with the spike? Cause that is pretty awewsome, IMO...

Personally I disagree when it comes to the panzer uniform. The enlisted and NCOs had really nice uniforms too. Ofcourse you have to count out that big baret they had, it looks like a slanted turban. Ugly! But the rest of the uniform is really nice.Originally Posted by King Henry V
