Swords Made of Letters - 1938. The war is looming in France - and Alexandre Reythier does not have much time left to protect his country. A novel set before the war.
A Painted Shield of Honour - 1313. Templar Knights in France are in grave danger. Can they be saved?
I was about to write something up myself about how they're born out of the massacre of the Roncevaux Pass through the Song of Roland - but you can just go and read some things on the wiki:

They were the real knights in shining armor. Round Table Knights are just cheap copies![]()

Depends. 'Cause if you assume to be the theory about Arthur and his fellows to be a badly corrupted legend about the late-Roman warlord Arturius Castus in Britain and his Sarmatian-descended heavy cavalry fighting against the Angles, Saxes and sundry, they're the older ones. The Moors only became an issue for the Franks in the late 7th century if not flat out the 8th, and Charlemagne was only around a bit later... And he spent rather more time fighting other Germanic peoples to his east plus apparently also the Avars than ever the Moors, who were in any case preoccupied with internal strife and the small but troublesome Christian princedoms holding out in the northern mountains of the peninsula.
"Let us remember that there are multiple theories of Intelligent Design. I and many others around the world are of the strong belief that the universe was created by a Flying Spaghetti Monster. --- Proof of the existence of the FSM, if needed, can be found in the recent uptick of global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. Apparently His Pastaness is to be worshipped in full pirate regalia. The decline in worldwide pirate population over the past 200 years directly corresponds with the increase in global temperature. Here is a graph to illustrate the point."

It wasn't the Moors that slaughtered his rear-gaurd anyway. It was the crafty Basques. He had tried to take Spain from the Moors, failing - he was returning with what spoils they had gained from the conquests and victories he had made. The only true reason for returning to the Rhine was because of a new rebellion by the devious Saxons. He sped on with some of his army while leaving the treasure carts with a number of paladins.
