Go here: http://www.totalwar.org/maps/stats.shtml
The old naginata is in the v1.0 or v1.01 stats, and these batch files allow you to swap stats back and forth. If you just want the naginata changed, you can edit Troopstats.txt and put in the old values for the naginata. Note that the footspeed probably shouldn't be changed to the old values.
Old naginata:
Naginata
{
0, 1, 4, 8, 8, 2, 8, 8, 256, 75, 75, 1500, 4, 0, 6, 5, 4, 0, 60
}
New naginata:
Naginata
{
0, 1, 5, 8, 8, 2, 8, 8, 256, 75, 75, 1500, 2, -1, 8, 6, 4, 0, 60
}
The numbers you want to change are the 4 numbers following the 1500. Those are the charge/attack/defend/armor values.

Right now there is no way to get the STW naginata graphics into WE/MI. The graphics doesn't determine how well a unit fights, but many players have said they like the old naginata unit graphic.

why did the unit graphic change anyway?

james,
My understanding is that space had to be made for the three new unit graphics, and so the naginata was made smaller.

Not realy smaller.
Before MI the Naginata had its own unit graphic (in a .biff file), but as it seems there is a problem with how many biffs the engine can handle.
So with the new graphics for the ninja and the mongols the developers did some interresting stuff to get the other new units in.
1. they used the yari unit and gave the naginata as an aditional weapon option to it. (Same as all the korean inf), getting rid of the old naginata that way.
2. They packed the ashi crossbows small scalled into the samurai archers file and rezised them back in the game.
3. as a Kensai they used the No Dachi unit only scaled bigger with the game engine.
4. Yari cav uses exactly the same graphics as naginata cavalery
5. Archer cav use the heavy cav attack graphics when in hand to hand
All this makes modding (when the bifedtor takes his next stepp) all that more difficult
Thanks Omegamann. A lot more involved than I realized.
