The best debator is actually rather difficult to appoint in the forum, since most discussions here are based on opinions and nearly all debators always take a biased position. In order to really appoint a debator, a random subject as well as a random side of the debate should be used.
In this forum you can see that many of the names on the list above will never enter a debate where they have to expose them selves in an unfavorable situation. If so happens, it will go back to language bickering and reports to moderators.
For me a good debator is a person that not only present facts, but also have an objective view on the opponent and have respect for the opposing side of the subject. In this forum this is unfortunately very rare.
I choose ichi in the poll, mostly based on a few of the debates I have followed, he have had most of what I have described.
I agree to some extent, but I believe that an idealistic moderate is also a biased position. The base belief that EVERYTHING is relative would contradict the base beliefs held by so many others that the moderation would then become definitively immoderate. It sounds good and pragmatic to always be a moderator, but it doesn't mean that one is unbiased. If it did, I think that we would have many more un-biased people in the world and I have not met one as of yet.Originally Posted by bmolsson
Again, my vote was with Pindar because he DOES sway my opinion often enough to be considered by me an amazing debater. Try to really read his posts and you may find that they only SEEM intimidating, but are actually put forward in a very clear way (with only the occasional stumper).

precise diction is very useful.
I never though any of his posts as intimidating, just a word game there he is trying to use his good English skill to create an error on the opponent, which then can be explored to turn the whole discussion in to just that specific point. Further down the discussion, many time the actual subject gets lost and he is the winner on the selected specific issue. Really impressive actually.....Originally Posted by TuffStuffMcGruff

Nearly everytime I read an argument he goes point by point in order to clobber the opposing notions.
What is a debater? He agrees when there doesn't seem to be any legitimate opposition and hits his points home when there is.
We all have faults in everything that we do, but I believe that the ratio between faults and gifts in Pindars style make him a superior debater.
i might as well start a fan club
adrian was pretty good, too

BTW, from the given list Don and Steppe Merc deserve a special mention IMO as two debators who enter the discussions most open-minded, i.e. they are actually willing to take a step back and adjust their view on an issue based on what the different camps in a discussion brought forward.
IMO that adds a lot of credibility to a debator.
Of the conservatives I'd rank Don highest, for the reasons Ser gives, and Redleg takes the trouble to give evidence for his views.
Of the rest its plainly JAG for sheer balls, even if most of what he says is nonsense. (very sound on the subject of music though).
"The only thing I've gotten out of this thread is that Navaros is claiming that Satan gave Man meat. Awesome." Gorebag
I'd have to go for Don. I've lost track of the number of times I've crossed swords with him, only to end up agreeing with him, sort of.
-> -> ->
But it's not him taking a step back. He's the most cunning, stealthy debator here. He hypnotizes you with kind words, by agreeing with you, by listening and making you believe he knows where you're coming from. But it's a trap, a trap set to tempt you to join the dark side. You only think he's agreeing with you, but in fact it's you agreeing with him.
And damn it, Don. I hate it when I agree with someone I'm disagreeing with.
And a special mention should go to all of those who make debating with them pleasant by their sense of humor. AdrianII, Little Grizzly and countless witty British posters.
So it looks like there will be only one real candidate for winner.Intresting that the majority of you guys agree on this one. While normally people does not agree on almost anything here in Backroom.
Ja Mata Tosainu Sama.
Franconicus, 1 point
Close to Prol and even Adrian. You are far too kind.
The only votes I recieved were from the two posters who mistook this pool for 'Most Vitriloic Haranguer of the Backroom.'
You're all rubbish :D
You need to choose a self-styled left-radical attack dog as the best debator... I'm sure there is one around somewhere....

You guys all master-debate too much anyway! why do we need a thread that points the finger at the one master-debates the most! Everyone can master-debate just as good as another can... it just depends on how often you do it
Allright! Ladies and Gentlemen.Fellow Patrons of this fine Org.
Poll is closed, the bribes have been stashed and the free beers have been drunk!
Its time for the results of the best debator of the Backroom Poll.
And the winner is... Pindar!!!
The dark lord Pindar has taken victory, with his unhuman verbal acrobacy.
First runner up is... Don Corleone!!!
Don "the Don"Corleone has came second in this fine contest with his more humain tactics.
And the third but not least: Gawain of Orkeny!!!
Gawain "The Bittbull" of Conservatives have taken the third position with his unrelentless tactics.
Actually The contender called "other" beated Gawain, but was disqualified, because we didnt know who he actually was.poor guy didnt give us his name.
So for one last time congratulations to the winners!Party hard!!
Ja Mata Tosainu Sama.
Umpf.. *pants pants*...
Wohoo... I... Did I miss something ?..
Hell, it is closed, I'd rather go back home and fire my flames on Gawain on the forum :D
Tribesman, he has a problem with being a genius. Even get's insulted by being congratulated. What a guy?!!?
Xiahou, Sharrukin and Taff being left out is pretty unforgivable.
idaho shouldnt have been left out either - i never agree with him on anything, but he is lightyears above many listed in debating a point

you guys should round up another poll: who least deserved to be left out of the best-debater poll?
that's a brilliant idea, and i am proud of myself.
now i'm here, and history is vindicated.
Im sorry Proletariat.Maybe i have to start: "Am i a bad boy, because i left Xiahou,Sharrukin anf Taff out of the Best debator of the backroom thread"?Originally Posted by Proletariat

Yeah... maybe then we shall see some justice
Seriously though, I think this is one of those subjects that perhaps wasn't best served by first-past-the-post voting. A much better system would be to now just include the top, for example, 5 choices and then reproduce the poll.

Justice schmustice. There was the option other and the only Patron that did get more then 1 voice was Aurelian with his two voices. You cant blame me how people are voting.

Maybe someones already claimed this one? But everyone knows I am the master debator.
