Swords Made of Letters - 1938. The war is looming in France - and Alexandre Reythier does not have much time left to protect his country. A novel set before the war.
A Painted Shield of Honour - 1313. Templar Knights in France are in grave danger. Can they be saved?
in RTR and some other mods it does, not in vanilla

That and the Spartan hoplite. However, on the same tech-level (if I remeber correctly) you can build armored hoplites with even better stats.Originally Posted by edyzmedieval

corinthian hoplite is a normal with better defence
athenian hoplite is a normal with better attack.

I don't really get why you would want an Athenian Hoplite, there's nothing really outstanding about them. Hoplites were just used better Allied Greeks during the last major war against Sparta.
I think the only outstanding guys were the Thebians - I think records stated that they had professional troops and later those Sacred Band Love Munkies - and Spartans.

thebes was destroyed in the RTW timeline, and it is always funny to have special units

You forgot the battle af Marathon and Miltiades? Lets pay lip service to history. I also like Spartan and Corinthian hoplites because of what they stand for. These are two purely racial terms that still exist in the English language because they stand for something. I love all three for this reason, and I'm glad that RTR uses them.I don't really get why you would want an Athenian Hoplite

I always build Corinthian, Spartan, and Athenian hoplites from my training center (Athens-Sparta-Corinth) there; it pretty much dead center of the map, and those units are pretty much invicible. Granted, armored hoplites are also pretty damn tough, and cheaper, but they're just not as good. Besides, as the Greeks, you can easily afford dozens upon dozens of stacks in less than two decades if you make the right moves and don't make tactical errors, so why not stock up on the super units?
In rtr(and other mods) arent athenean and corinthian hoplites the same as regular in statsOriginally Posted by CMcMahon
In RTR 5.41, Athenian has slightly better defense and attack than Corinthian (but still worse than the almighty Spartans, who also get the bonus of 2hp), if I remember correctly. I haven't touched my Greek game in a few weeks, since I'm more into my (much more difficult) Carthaginian game at the moment.
edit: Wait, did you mean that in RR Athenian and Corinthian hoplites arethe same as regular hoplites? Definitely not. They're like uber-armored hoplites.
okay, i must have missed something. I thought they were just the same as regular hoplites. Its been along time since i played rtr though, since im now on darth mod v5.
in 4.0 they had same stats. now theyre slightly better but way more expensive. i modded it cuz it seemed unfair. they have better morale and slightly better stats and a bit more expensive.

Athens never had exceptional Hoplites. Marathon was an odd battle and did not prove anything exceptional about Athenian Hoplites. The Athenians had better Marines than almost any other greek state and so perhaps it would be better giving them a bonus to attacks on other ships (or perhaps a decrease in losses, or something). Corinth as well did not have anything spectacular. The Argives had, perhaps, the other best all round Hoplites in Greece, but then they recieved yearly drubbings by the Spartans, wonderful teachers in the get better or get deader school of battle. The Thebans had good leadership and exceptional skirmishers, and light troops.
Why make only hoplite special units? give the Corinthians the Skirmishers of Thebes, give them a bonus against a hoplite formation, I don't know how, maybe a slight increase in number of javelins, and make an Athenian naval unit that has a slight increase in fighting capability, or maybe travel distance.
If you want to give Athenian Hoplites a bonus based on Marathon, give them a stamina bonus or something. I still say that I haven't heard anything outstanding about them.

Athens should be reconized by its culture, science, philosophy, navy, etc.., but its hoplites weren't anything special.
Marathon was won for one because the persians were weak against any hoplite and because the athenian army was well led.
Perhaps someone should mod the Athenians a giant Archimedes Death Ray as a mobile siege weapon. I'd be up for that as a fantasy unit.![]()
