    Van Gogh suspect confesses guilt

Bouyeri was arrested shortly after van Gogh's killing
The man charged with the murder of the controversial Dutch film-maker Theo van Gogh has confessed to the killing at his trial in Amsterdam.
Mohammed Bouyeri, 27, said he acted out of his religious beliefs and that he would do "exactly the same" if he were ever set free.

Prosecutors say Mr Bouyeri killed Mr Van Gogh in a ritualistic murder committed in the name of radical Islam.

The November 2004 murder shocked the Netherlands and raised ethnic tensions.

Mr Bouyeri, who has dual Dutch-Moroccan nationality, could face a life sentence if he is convicted.

"I take complete responsibility for my actions. I acted purely in the name of my religion," he told the court in Amsterdam.

"I can assure you that one day, should I be set free, I would do exactly the same, exactly the same," he added.

His lawyer told the court on Monday there would be no defence case put forward by Mr Bouyeri or on his behalf.

    'Martyr' hopes

Mr Bouyeri is accused of shooting and stabbing Mr Van Gogh to death as he cycled along an Amsterdam street.

A note stuck to his body with a knife threatened the Somali-born Dutch MP Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who wrote the script for Mr van Gogh's film Submission, about violence against women in Islamic society.

Mr Bouyeri was arrested following a shoot-out with police just minutes after Mr Van Gogh's killing.

The prosecution said Mr Bouyeri had hoped to die a "martyr" at the hands of the police.

The murder sparked a wave of revenge attacks on mosques and counter-attacks against Christian churches in the Netherlands.

Not much chance of him getting out then, I would expect that he would be disowned by his religion as well.

Yes, it's very worrying that a tiny minority of a small minority can do so much damage.

Although he is clearly not entirely sane. So that's a big of an overgeneralisation really.

Apparently he is not recognising the court's authority, so is saying nothing more than to confirm his name etc.. He doesn't even want a defense. Idiot.

Actually, with some of the crazy Dutch court cases Fragony & Adrian have posted, I'm afraid they're going to release him.

How can they release him? He admited he did it, and he tried to shoot police. How could he be released?

He can't be released. Not with the evidence against him, and with the seriousness of the crimes.

Fragony posted a few cases this past winter of people that were pretty much a dead duck in the cross-hairs that got released too.

-Judge finds that his confession is inadmissable.
-Determines that at the time of the attack, wasn't responsible for his actions.
-Buys this loser's argument that he was acting in accordance with his religions and therefore it's protected.
    -Who freakin knows.

I'm NOT saying he SHOULD go free. I'm saying courts have an amazing way of being 'too clever by half' and releasing a lot of putzes that shouldn't be let go. Cripes, they almost let Manson go out on $500 bail (which granted, was the late 60's, more like $5K now, but he still could have swung it).

Nobody is going to buy into the idea that he had to viciously kill someone and shoot at police becuase of his 'religion'.

Also, for this 'too clever by half' stuff to happen, he wold need to have a really good defense to work at all the legal loopholes, but this guy has refused to have a defense at all.

So, thankfully, he won't be released.

Which in and of itself is a defense with loopholes. He can turn around at appeal and say, my defense attorneys never even put up a defense. What up with that? And free he goes. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING the legal system comes up with surprises me anymore. If you want instances of gross miscarriages of justice with different people being exonerated, give me about 4 hours after I get home and I'll give you a boatload.

There you go with the broad brush again.

First of all "Islam" is not a physical entity capable of "striking" at anything. Muslims are capable of striking at things, but far from all (or even a majority) of Muslims condone terrorism and murder, so your statement is simply sublime in it's blatant prejudice and sillyness.

    Xenophobia strikes again.

Nice turnaround. You label Muslims as murderers and then protest at being labeled.

    Good one.

I pretty much hope that he´ll get locked away. I don´t go to the middle east and kill mullah´s that don´t like christians, so he shouldn´ßt do the other way around, letting aside that this was pure murder. Sometimes I get the feeling that some people really need to be forced to get along with us.

I just reread that post and realized that it was quite heavy-footed. While I still maintain that you are painting all Muslims with too broad a brush in this particular thread, it was out of line for me to imply that you always do it, Panzer.

    My apologies.

But in this situation, the murderer has specifically said that he refuses all defense representation. So he can't say that it wasn't offered. And, to be honest, I don't think that this person, who doesn't recognise the court's authority, is likely to use any form of complex loophole.

String the bastard up by his thumbs, using piano wire, then set fire to his genitals, and then pull his tongue out and place a white hot branding iron on it. Then give him probation and a council flat. Seems the way we tend to do things.
There are times I wish they’d just ban everything- baccy and beer, burgers and bangers, and all the rest- once and for all. Instead, they creep forward one apparently tiny step at a time. It’s like being executed with a bacon slicer.

Not if you don't criticise the whole religion for the actions of a few.

Yea, I know Im a bigot for bringing up the role Islam has in islamic terrorism.

I made my opinions about Islam clear in the "Muslim Apologist Syndrome" thread. An interpretation of Islam that is supported by a large group of muslims, not most, but a significant group breeds hatred toward anything not muslim.

I know thats supposed to be off limits for conversation, but buzzwords like xenophobe and bigot can only stifle real discussion for so long...
