A man from Iraq was taken hostage with his uncle, wife, and children by some Saddam thugs. He was told that he would be allowed to leave in order to achieve some demand of theirs (I don't remember what). Before he left, he was brutally tortured. He was told that if he returned, they would all be set free. But if he did not come back, his family would die.
His uncle told him to never return because then they would all die. He knew his uncle was right. And both knew that the uncle, his wife, and kids were all dead either way.
He did not return. His story was in an American Magazine a few years ago.
