Thread: Anyone know which .BIF file is the newer Naginata symbol?

I refer to the battle flag symbol. I liked the one in the original game, but in WE, I can't understand why, a new one was introduced which always reminds me of a clown.
Now, I see in my Shogun folder there is a folder called 'frontend_files', and in there a sub-folder called 'army select' and in there another called 'panelmen'. Among the files in there, is one called 'old_naginata.BIF', but all the others are just numbered. I reckon if I knew which file to replace I could (after backing-up) rename the 'old_naginata.BIF' and get the original symbol back. So, anyone know which file is which? That's assuming I'm right about these 'panelmen' files of course!

    Konnichiwa,

Yes this is the correct folder. Use RSW Bifeditor to view the content of Biffiles. The naginata is unit4, lunit4 also shows the nag (I don't recall this exactely anymore, but 1 might be used in the mongol era, while the other is for sengoku).

By backing up files, and renaming you'll find out in no time.

    Good luck.

OK I've experimented but all these files seem to be for the symbols in the battle set-up stage, when you're choosing your army. I can't find a file that goes on the unit flag in the actual battle, which is what I want to do.
There must be such a file somewhere - any suggestions?

Found it! It took me a while because I assumed it would be a .bif file. 'Fog.Lbm' in the textures/Men folder has all the unit flag bits & pieces. Unfortunately I can't find a way to put the old naginata symbol on there without messing it up. Anyone else found a way?
For anyone who wants to use the old naginata symbol in the army selection screens, panelmen4, lunit4, munit3 and unit4 are the .bif files you want.

    Konnichiwa,

Yes Fog.lbm is the file used for the 'cards'.
This lbm file is of a special format (not the lbm produced by say Paint Shop Pro). Scot Mc Donnel found a program that can edit this lbm. You can find it in the tools section.

This is something that has bugged me too

so i tried the above and that all worked,
    kinda,
the 'card' picture is a little off to the right now - but if i place it any further left in the .lbm file i 'overlap' another unit
    - i can live with it,

now when i'm in army select screen and i place my mouse over the naganita i see the original(STW) image,
but when i move the mouse off it reverts to the faded clown image,
which file do i edit to replace the faded clown with an orig(STW) naganita?

(i tried replacing the unit strip, but i still see the faded clown)

    Konnichiwa,

    Front-end files/armyselect/panelmen
    contains the old_naginata.BIF

Panelman4.bif in that folder is the naginata units you selected for the army.

    Front-end files/armyselect
lunit4.bif is the overlay in sengoku era.
munit4.bif is the overlay for mongol era.
One can use old_naginata.BIF to replace both, I guess the original STW has better matching overlays (color). unit4 from old stw blends better as overlay. unit4.bif -> l/munit4.bif.

addon_unitsstrip.BIF seems to be the bif file you need Barocca san.

addon_unitsstrip.BIF and unitsstrip.BIF contain only the faded shadows of the mongol units,

original_unitsstrip.BIF contains only original STW type sengoku unit (faded shadows), but still has the clown/naganita in it,
(swapping the original STW strip file in to replace original_unitsstrip.BIF has no effect)

unit4, lunit4, panelman4 and munit3 contain the full colour Naggy image,
fog contains the unit card (battle icon) image.

there appear to be 2 more strip files somewhere,
one containing all the (faded) sengoku units, including the new ones
and one containing the (faded) japanese mongol era units,
but i can find neither of these files,
they are either tucked away somewhere under a different name,
or they are (unlikely) hard coded into the executable.

all other files in the armyselect folder
That do not have unit in their names,(and subfolder) contain left arrow, box outlines etc.

    Konnichiwa,

The unitstrip has frames. When you load a BIF file with RSW's BifReader (the 3th version is available in the tools section) you'll only see the 1st. Use the frame pulldown menu to see the other two.

Some BiF files have over 100 frames.

    Tosa,
Thanks, i had an older version of bif reader,
    excellent tool,
also lbm editor is pretty nifty (who says old software is a joke)

    ANYWAY
    You have mail,
a set of files to restore the original STW naganita icon to Warlords!

The only thing I have not tested is campaign,
to see if the build icon is correct,

but unit selection and battle - ah - it's so nice to lose the damn clown icon..
    8-)

thanks again to you for your help, and to Hulegu for the inspiration.
    Barocca.
