Death-row convicts have also escaped. I don't think poor prison oversight a very strong argument.

First, you're not killing someone for revenge- like I said. Second, I see other purposes than retribution as apparent. As you mention, reform- but also it is a deterrent. Also, while they are in prison they are unable to re-offend. So, yes, I think there are many other reasons above retribution. In fact, I don't put any stock at all in foggy notions such as retribution or societal balance as reasons for criminal justice.Originally Posted by Redleg
