    Use the original disc.
No, there's no no-cd crack for 1.2 Please don't ask for that kind of stuff as it is not kosher for these forums.

No...like Wlesmania says ..there is NO NO-CD PATCH for 1.2

As for the legality, well, that is a grey area. For those of us with legal copies, we are not actually breaking the law using a no-cd. The guy who made it is certainly breaking the EULA and is breaking the law as a result.

For those of you who have 'lost' or 'damaged' your CD's tough. I am sure CA will provide a replacement if you send them your damaged one.....Besides..caring for a CD isn't that hard.

Just treat it like it is a fragile thing that cost you quite a bit of money...er hang on......

Because the no-cd patch for 1.0 is not official, and as such whoever made it made it illegally.

There are no legal no-cd patches for rome, and no illegal one for 1.2

As Myrddraal says, Creative Assembly didn't make the no-cd patch. They DID pay money for the copy protection that is making the 'insert CD' message come up, and they do so to prevent people pirating their software and taking away the revenue that pays their wages.

Additionally, since the exe file has to be hacked to make a no-cd, every time they release a patch, the hackers would have to start again.

As you will have guessed from the general tone of the replies here, asking for an illegal hack of the copy protection here is not popular. We have regular and very helpful visits form members of the CA team here, and we support them by buying the software! Go buy the game and the CD message will disappear.

Heh... in his defense, I had the same thing happen to me. I had to replace my CD drive to get RTW to run using the play disc after the 1.2 patch. 1.0 and 1.1 worked fine, but the 1.2 patch caused me alot of grief. Good thing all the fixes and improvements were worth the trouble. I understand there are issues between the SafeDisc v3.20.022 update that was added to the patch and some optical drives. Hilekar's does sound an awful lot like a case of piracy gone awry, but I know the issue exists firsthand so I'll be the first one to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Activision's official stance is that it is a hardware related problem, and I was told by their CS dept. it is a rare issue that is only happening with older, outdated drives and OEM drives which are no longer supported with firmware updates. Almost every major drive manufacturer, LiteOn, Plextor, Philips, Teac, etc., has released firmware updates for their older model drives to correct this issue with the newest version of SafeDisc.

I met a few other people in the course of trying to figure it out and we all had the same problem. Most of us having this problem owned Dell, Gateway, or HP/Compaq (or comparable "value" PC vendors) PCs and were still using the original bargain drives that came in our PCs, drives which seldom recieved any love in the form of updates. It sucks, but most large-scale PC vendors could care less whether or not their customers are able to play the latest build of RTW on a PC they sold the customer.

The last update available for the drive I just replaced was from April 2004, months before I even bought the PC, and I wasn't so sure there would even be another released so I went ahead and bought a new drive for laughs to try it. I figured if I'm having problems with RTW now, I would likely have the same problems with any other new games I may buy in the near future that also use SafeDisc's copy protection. I find there's nothing quite as aggrivating as buying a game only to find out that a flaw or oversight in the copy protection is preventing me from playing what I just shelled out my cash for.

Hilekar, try updating the firmware for your optical drive you're playing the game from. If it is a brand name or even just a fairly new drive, that's probably all you need to do to fix it. Failing that, you'll need to reinstall and patch back to 1.1 and play that version indefinitely or purchase a newer drive as I did to play v1.2. For reference, the drive I got that worked is a PlexWriter PX-230A from Plextor, and I didn't need to update anything to get RTW to run from it.

P.S. Bwian, I'm pretty sure replacing the game's .exe with a No-CD crack is violating the EULA, actual ownership of a license is irrelavant. I haven't read RTW's to be sure, but I'd bet on it. Having a backup set of discs is usually fine and totally legal if you own the game, but modifying the executable(that includes replacing it with another) is expressly forbidden in the EULA for most every game. I often use No-CDs too to save myself from having to change discs to play other games, but using them is assuredly illegal even if you own the game.

Update the firmware for your CD/DVD-ROM drive and if that doesn't fix it, buy a new one.
