What sort of steppe infanty was actually used´in the period? only dismounted cavalry?

Nah, the Huns were actually quite infantry based, since they absorbed a lot of Germanic influence. But their infantry weren't from the steppe, thus they wouldn't have been steppe infantry.
But most of the infantry of the other steppe peoples (Sarmatians, Alans), would have been archers.

Ignore the unit selection - you knew it wouldn't be any good.

Then try the battle pack to look at the AI - I got smashed on BKB's Badon Hill II (forgot actual name). The AI (gasp!) did the sensible thing got on the biggest hill and sat there. Try it playing on VH as the Saxons.
