Thread: Phalanx...

    Default Phalanx...

I just started as Greek Cities on VH/VH very large devisions

After a few years the Bruti attacked Thermon where i had three militia hoplites and two hoplites...

So i put two hoplites groups next to each other in the main street...
it was around 16 lines strong, but both devisions where defeated by only one divison of equites attacking them from the front... that's unbeliveable!!!

THen i started new game just to test something, so i brought my spartan hoplietes from sparta to thermon, and did the same...

i put the spartan hoplities in the main street, so they where 6 or 7 lines strong, and the militia hoplites guarded the other streets.

and again were my spartanian hoplites beaten by one divison of equites attacking them from the front, and the cavalry was just moving threw the spears as if they weren't there...

djuring that my militia hoplites were defeatet by velites attacking them from the front, and the velites didn't throw at least one spear, they just attacked with their knife...

so y is the phalanx so useless...
(did the bugfixer somehow lowered there strength? Before i had a game as Carthag and the holy soldiers and the punier infantry hold of nearly everything in the streets)

might be because of Vh/Vh. it causes enemy units to get a bonus, the AI doesnt gain tactical abbility.

Hardly, all bug-fixer changes are well documented in readme, and none of them has anything to do with this.

I would say that it's the VH difficulty that's causing this.

The difficulty levels speed up the pace by adding massive attack bonuses. Easy is the slowest, VH is the fastest.

Yes, the problem with cav breaking spears frontally is a hallmark of RTW. Part of that is trouble with the charge effect (it rewards armour and basic attack, but not much else.) Oaty found a nother problem with the charge vs. phalanx recently as well and that will have some impact.

It might be influenced by generals and morale, but VH is messed up in having very high kill rates (attack bonuses given to BOTH sides, not just the AI.)
    Rome Total War, it's not a game, it's a do-it-yourself project.

Actually medium is the slowest, as in easy the bonuses go to the player.

Also the difficulty level bug affects only custom battles, AFAIK it works in campaigns.

iirc the difficulties effect both sides

and yes, the campaign bonuses are good (apart from biased autoresolve) so you should play on vh/m

When you play battles in vh, you can´t complain about unrealistic results.

The problem with VH is that it turns the game into a click fest.

Macka, if you don’t have it yet, get the mod that will stop cavalry from leaping. It goes a long way to make phalanxes more durable against horse. Not as impervious as they should be but better. Otherwise, the cav jumps into the phalanx, the infantry draw their swords and the whole formation goes to hell.

Regrettably, I don’t recall the name of the mod.

Very hard does unbalance things too, of course.

Player 1's mod I thought had one in it.

You can also use 2 lines of 2 man thick phalanxes, the horses that get throuhg the first line get impaled by the second.

true, but that wasn't because of VH. there are some bugs in RTW with charging/phalanx's that CA has claimed to have fixed in the XPAC.
