England has only just had Lost on their tv's last night, with two episodes airing on Channel 4 while afterwards a spoiler episode was shown on channel 4's other chanel E4...and might i say it was brilliant! so what the hell is that monstr thing and why was there a polar bear on the Island? tell me tell me i dont care about spoilers
    :)
    When I was a child
    I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
    The child is grown,
    The dream is gone.
    I have become comfortably numb...

I watched all 3 (Thank you E4!) and I must say I'm hooked. Great show! I'll probably import the DVD set from America when it comes out in September. That way I get to watch it months earlier and without the breaks.

The polar bear is not explained in the first season. (It's not impossible, though, just think of polar bears in zoos in warm countries)
The monster is not explained either but you will get more hints at what it might be.
    Spoiler:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
There're several encounters with the monster. You never really see it, though.
Locke survives at least one encounter, after which he develops a strange connection
to the island. On a second encounter Jack, Kate, Charlie and Locke first flee from
the monster but then realise that Locke is lagging behind. Jack returns to Locke to
find him struggling with something. They discover that the monster obviously leaves or moves
through subterranean walkways. Combined with the thick cable running into the sea and
the hatch they find it suggests that it may be a machine.

It's smoke. Some people see faces in there.
In one of the last episodes of the 1. season some pirates appear.
Some people say that these faces resemble the pirates.

    Btw,
    here're the numbers I mentioned: 4 8 15 16 23 42

I record the Lost episodes on my digital recordor that comes with the my cable (sort of like a poor man's TIVO). Can't say that I'd ever want to watch it on my tiny computer screen when I can watch it on my Plasma TV, however.
