Currently we've a war going on between the record and film industry on the one hand
and the programmers of p2p software and their users on the other hand. The media industry argues that
since the content of p2p networks can hardly be surveilled and is used to distribute copyrighted material.
The p2p lobby argues that providing the technology is not a crime, filesharing helps to distribute open
source material and, contrary to the industry's claims, p2p networks actually increase the amount of
legally bought material and its market value by increasing its popularity.
The main focus of the media industry was initially on Music (Napster, Kazaa). When technology
improved and transmission of larger files became feasible, the crusade against p2p started to include
Movies.
The sharing of TV-series was overlooked for a long time. It seems the industry jsut only realized
how much series are shared a few months ago. When they did they forced a few sites off the net.
The fair use argument in one of my above posts is dismissed by the industry because it's impossible to
reduce sharing to a certain group of "authorized" people.
In your case it means that yes, it was illegal to download that file. That is from a perspective of a lawyer
of the film/ movie industry. They would argue that their copyright was infringed.
You could argue that the episode had been aired anyway and that you easily could have made a digital copy
if you hadn't missed it. In both cases you would own a digital copy.
See the proplem here? (Btw, I've no idea how Norway handles it. In Russia you've allofmp3.com where
you can get almost any music for very little money. Copyright doesn't really exist in Russia and
other states are quite pissed that there's no possiblity to stop the Russians)
It's my personal opinion that we, as consumers, finance the broadcasted series. As soon as it's aired
it becomes public property of the consumers. For me there's no point in waiting for the free-tv-premiere
which is badly syncronized, when I can get the original format, enjoy it and improve my english.
So, the industry generally sees p2p sharing as illegal, different nations have different copyright regulations, or
none at all. Concerning the fair use argument, downloading is illegal when the respective program has not
been broadcasted in your country. In case of other files you need an original in your possession before
you're allowed to download a digital copy of it. And even then......

3 episodes later today. I think these are the last ones from the 1st season, but I may be wrong. I've never seen the smoke monster (only the huge polar bear), but from that spoiler-pic, I clearly see faces in the smoke.
And sure the numbers are important, as Hurley and Rousseau said.

Yeah, 10pm on Channel 4 with the following episode at 11 on E4.
@ Ra’s al Ghul: Thank you for your answers. I take it that you either study law or work in law.
Since it is a grey area I will not loose any sleep over having downloaded a couple of the episodes earlier this spring.
The next morally laden problem would be to wait for the show to air season 2 here, while episodes week after week are uploaded to the torrent communities.
I think the copyright laws in Scandinavia could be more lenient that what is norm of the rest of Europe and certainly US. One of the popular torrent sites which happen to be Scandinavian based (I will not mention its name as that would be to promote a site with piracy content and would be in violation with the forum rules) has not been shut down because it does not violate any laws in the nation in which it is hosted. They make a habit of posting the letters they get about copyright infringement and the site’s written replies. I am sure we are dealing with loopholes here.

Actually the big media industries have to face their globalization-backlash
on this level. Can't say I'm having much pity for them.

Rubbish B movie nonsense, trying to be a neo con allegory for the US. Lets all rediscover our pioneer spirit. Plus they need to hire a school kid studying GCSE physics to explain what's likely to happen to a plane breaking up at 40000 feet.
Quo usque tandem abutere, Catilina, patientia nostra
Actually my dad works as a planning engineer, and before that he was a technician in the RAF, he said that if strategic nuts and bolts were loose, plus the airframe being stressed (as it gets at 40000ft) the cabin depressuriseses (sp??) and it is eniterly plausable that the back if the aircraft would fall off.Originally Posted by Catiline
You've got to remember aircraft are fragile little things and if one major thing goes wrong, you are dead and going to a watery grave.
As for "happening to crash into a deserted island" if you just look in a normal atlas at the area of Fiji you will see it is covered in THOUSANDS of tiny islands so it is again plausable that they would crash on a deserted island.
What i do find crap though (a TINY thing, coming from a guy who KNOWS aircraft) the first episode, first scene where the engine explodes, there is no way that engine would've kept running with no feul or starter motor (which needs electricity from the batteries in the nosecone) therefore would not have exploded, a tiny thing, but the only thing i can see to be unplausable

It's more the, 'hey this plane's in bits spread over the jungle, having disintegrated miles up, but what do you know, we're pretty much ok'. I'm not denying that planes break up, more the effect it has on a bunch of squashy humans.
Quo usque tandem abutere, Catilina, patientia nostra
Catiline, the survivors do reliaze it. Indeed, one or two begin to believe that the island itself has powers (which would explain their being alive).

I've recently gotten into the series. Great so far! Reminds me a lot of series one of Twin Peaks! Lets hope that it doesnt follow in the footsteps of TP and follow up a brilliant and original first series with a terrible second!!![]()

Martyr, there are 2 Twin Peaks series ??
Just got the DVD (thanks Movietyme!) about 11 days early, and I'm in the UK! Up to about Episode 7 now and its getting more and more interesting. I'll be finished this by the time the UK are still on Episode 6. Its the best way to go.![]()
Yeah well, you'd better hold your hopes until season II, because the last episodes are crappy![]()
I mean, what the hell ? We don't learn *one* *single* thing. Sure, each episode is cool, but I seriously hope it's not going to turn into yet another endless serie, a la Alias or The Pretender (I've been told there would be at least 5 seasons)
Meneldil, we find out what's in the hatch in the begining of the second season. And we sort of find out what the monster is...

Here were are. I waited like 5 episodes, thinking they would finally enter in the hatch, and now I have to wait 2 more months ? Hopefully, season 2 will be as good as the first one.
And the Monster. I was like 'what the hell is that ?', and I thought 'heh, *finally* we're going to have a look at this monster'.
Oh well, I'm going to have a look at that SpoilerFix site
Just saw that season 2 won't be on french TV before June 2006.![]()
Oh, well that sucks.![]()
My theory is that the monster is a machine that is underground. The French lady says there are no monsters, and she calls it a security device.

I like the series so much, I am afraid to read the rest of this thread in case someone spoils it for me. The UK is only very early into the series - episode 4 or so - and I am sure it's one of those things were the journey is much more fun than the destination.
Simon, that's probably for the best, if only to be safer than sorrier. I don't think there is too much that is given away, though there are some things.

Finished watching it on Saturday. Safe to say I am thoroughly hooked - this programme is the best thing on TV since The Sopranos. UK people I urge you all to perservere as it gets even better. Some many questions! Can't wait for Series 2 - it'll probably be out on DVD in the US before we even get Episode 1 of it here!
