I know to unlock more avatars you need higher post counts but is it possible to upload your own custom avatars? Thankyou

Okay thankyou anyway Dutch guy. Thankyou

I have one, although it was just used to test the system I have kept it since. I would like it resized somewhat when they become more widespread. To view it you do need to enable url avatars, after you do this you should disable normal ones as you will see two avatars for everyone (if someone doesn't have an url avatar their normal one shows up in it's place so you won't miss them). I think the process just sort of stopped at some point during the discussion, Tosa any news on where url avatars are at?
I originally thought about making it fully custom (no 18+ though), but it got more complex, I had a little sabbatical, there's a new version of this board coming (was expected to be released already, but can happen anyday soon now). That version will be totally different and none of the current add-ons will work (yes, we will all miss the warning system). So, I put the avatar thing on ice for now. But nothing prevents the users to continue the debat about what and how.
The system is ready to be used here and now, but it will stop working after the upgrade. It will take at least a few hours to bring it back then. But that's lower on the todo list as all skins etc have to be redone too.

Personally, I like the fact that the Org
doesn't have custom avatars. I think it really adds to the feel of the place.
To me, adding custom avatars would be another step away from the Orgs roots, from its whole culture and ambience. I think most of the vets would keep their avatars, but newbies would come in with all their fancy dan whizz-bang avatars, and this traditionalist stick-in-the-mud doesn't like that
The game avatars remind us of what the Org is primarily about - The Total War series of games.
Personally I liked it when you had set avatars when your postcount was below 500. I changed to the Bishop at 500 and I have no intention of ever changing. Just like I hope Ichi, Puzz3D and all the other old timers never change theirs
Uesugi Kenshin 21:29 08-15-2005
Ah, that makes sense. Any if you'll be able to get similar modules for the ones that will be lost (for example the warnings)?
Ah well it's nice to know it will be back later on.
Yes
Uesugi Kenshin,
This update is mostly 'engine', but there are some neat goodies. The engine allows plugins, which is a faster way to install modules, not every module can be made like that though. Modules have to be made first. There alread are loads of neat modules, and the authors of the larger ones will/are porting their to work with the new software. So, it will mostly be a matter of time.
Mount Suribachi. It's not worked out fully yet, but most/all of your concerns are addressed already: new members couldn't get a custom avatar right away and there was going to be some sort of theme to respect the TW theme. The silly, naive though to make it fully custom was created in my lazy brain

IMO use of custom avatars will reduce the org. atmosphere, cause some people would like to use Mickey Mouse as their avatar, others - some orcs and elves, so all in all it will badly effect the calm atmosphere of antic times (?) which is now very well present.

Thanks for the good news Tosa!
Suribachi I think it would be good for the Org, as long as there was a historical portrait type theme, have you seen mine? Do you think that sort of thing would work for the Org?
therother 03:00 08-17-2005
Well, the system as it's currently proposed won't really affect the atmosphere unless you let it: in order to see the custom avatars you need to check the box in your
Options. If you prefer the board avatars, just don't select to see the custom avatars. Also, guests (and members who aren't logged in) will also only see the board avatars.
I agree with Tosa. I think that you should have the board avatars until you reach a certain post count like 500 or 1000 but then you are allowed the privalege of using your own custom avatar if you wish. However they have to inkeep with the .org's atmosphere as so many have mentioned.
I agree with what has been said above though that the .org wouldn't be the same if people had mickey mouse avatars etc. They had to b something to do with the total war series.
However after writing this now I and reading what all of you have put I am not so sure I agree with myself, to be honest now I think that I would prefer the standard .org avatars.

Maybe that should be for 2000 posts.
Maybe but I wasn't trying to mention the exact number of posts required I was just trying to make a point.

What's wrong with the built-in custom avatar function? That users can't decide to just view the default avatar?

I thought templates will be portable to 3.5.

we want, we want, we want, we want....TO FREAK YOU ALL OUT
For time served I have a custom icon as well + when I was admin here we used to have a several dozen custom icons; to be honest it was a real hassle + I think that there should be as few as possible (preferiabily none).
You guys are on the right track by saying that it generally takes away from what the org is all about, and Tosa is probably right to stay clear of it; imo it's a deathtrap for an admin, both from a workload perspective and from the potential problems that could arise with patrons getting upset.
I still have most of the old custom icons I designed but I don't have webspace, I wish I could post them, some are really wild. If anyone has webspace let me know and I'll email them to you and we can post them in this thread just for interest sake.

I say make it 10000. Now where the hell is mine?
The Stranger 20:59 08-24-2005
no i dont think it must be post related.....it will danger my status as a first grade spammer....if its post related the entire org will flood with +1 posts. they already got a hard time with JAG they need another ten years off.

I don't know. If we get the url avatar system up and running with the new board, I could well imagine those avatars being popular picks...
