Changing faction midgame

OK, this is a bit of a long shot, I know, but here goes.......

Does anyone know of a way to change what faction you are playing midgame?

I doubt that there is a way, but if so, one could possibly use it to play turn-based ('hotseat') multiplayer campaigns.

Any ideas?
