    Default Hapiness and money

    Hello EB community.

Being very impressed by this week's preview I started to dream of a near perfect RTW. I started to go over some of the things (not AI related) that make the game boring after a while. So I came to hapiness and money.

    Hapiness

The cities in RTW grow WAY too fast and as the game goes on cities start to get too big for garrisons to keep in check. The only way to deal with this in RTW is with the cheesy manouver of letting the city rebel and masacrating it. So much as I don't wan't the game to became any easier (it is already) there should be other ways to keep people happy. One way the crossed my mind was using trade resources as hapiness bonuses, something like luxuries in Civilization.
This would not only counter this problem but would also be a very historical stimulation for empires to seek distant lands to provide their population with required luxuries and exotic products.
I would also like to know how are you going to handle slave trade. It always looked broken to me.

    Money

This is simple. There is too much money. I have know idea how you guys can strike the balance betwee too much money and not enough money to have those epic battles but I would like to hear what you have to say.

Anyway all this is just to pass the time while we wait for the open beta witch will certanly open everyones minds and make the game progress even further.

I agree with him about money. The thing that makes RTW so freakingly easy after the early game is that once you get a critical mass of provinces you can get so much income that you can support 5-6 or more fullstacks (which I take advantage of to the max) and that means that you've got enough striking power to keep expanding without worry, also outnumbering enemy armies so often and so greatly that you can just pwn them by simply using your troops as a battering ram through their centre if you wanted. The game should make it such that it is difficult to maintain more than 1-2 field armies, and the cost of maintenance should often send you spiralling into debt, compelling you to disband your army once you're done with it. That's more realistic, since apart from the legions at the limes in the Empire all other armies were actually called together for service, then disbanded when they were not needed, retaining only professional, mercenary, rare or standing-army units e.g. elephants, royal guards.

I wonder also if it's possible to include a debt/credit facility that allows you to borrow money from allied or neutral factions to sort of duplicate private loans taken from foreign merchants by the state? Just a random thought, this one. I thought it ridiculous that the state of debt was irrevocable. Maybe I don't know, you could take out a loan, and use that loan to build a building you really needed, but this loan would be a separate figure, and it would be reflected in your real treasury as a debt?

    Sorta like BEFORE: -5000d.
    AFTER LOAN OF 600d: -5600d 600d

'Course, this loan facility would come with a limit, for example a loan cap of 20% of your current debt if it's 5000 or less, 10% if between 5000 and 7500, and 5% after that? And borrowing too much would hurt your 'credit rating', making loans even less likely?

There are a lot of tweaks we have made to aliviate that problem, from new buildings that have happiness bonus to nerfing growth, etc...

Well, all factions will have much more difficulty in accumulating vast amounts of money. In fact, only with a well developed region can you have a balanced economy.
