I'm glad I headed you off at the pass Dave, because I wanted to make sure that you didn't post the punchline to that joke, which I have heard before and find extremely insensitive and heartless. I have a family member with a severe mental disability, so I really don't see any humor in "retard" jokes. They are not, as Proletariat described yours, "classic." They are just good old-fashioned mean.Originally Posted by Devastatin Dave

Don't you think you are being a bit overly sensitive? Afterall, you continuosly berate the mental capacity of the President of the United States and many members of this forum. Kind of hypocritical don't you think? Of course you don't, since its only offensive if YOU don't agree with it, very typical.Originally Posted by Goofball

That about sums up my opinion. They're free to behave stupidly if they choose to- that doesn't mean we can't call it what it is.Originally Posted by Crazed Rabbit

At any rate Dave, I challenge you to find anywhere in any post ever, where I referred to GWB or anybody else as a "retard." There is a very big difference between saying something like "Bush is an idiot," and telling a joke that goes "What's better than winning the gold medal in the Special Olympics?.... Not being a retard." And for the record, I do not "continuosly berate the mental capacity of the President of the United States and many members of this forum." Yes, I have lost my temper a few times and let sarcasm get away with me, but for the most part it has been limited to implications about a person's lack of understanding of what is being said. If you're going to make a statement like that, back it up.
Honestly Dave, is this the fight you want to pick? That telling jokes about the mentally handicapped is a good and acceptable practice, and that people who don't like them are being overly sensitive? You really want to hitch your wagon to this one?
Think it over.

Then he would already know that telling jokes about the mentally handicapped is mean, and I wouldn't be having this conversation with him.Originally Posted by Proletariat

Every single person here who cracked a San Fran joke has at least one gay relative, including me.
I'll never understand how anyone can fly off the handle simply because someone else said a few words. If I was that sensitive about anything I thought I might have an apopleptic emotional response over, I'd at least try to hide it by under reacting and not dole out the satisfiction to the person. But, that's me.
Although I won't understand, hope you're not too mad, Goof.
Goof, I PM'd you...
I apologize to all in this thread for making light of something that should not be made light of. I especially apologize to you Goof...
So, lets get back on topic so that this thread can continue to be debated...

I think the difference is in the ability to defend oneself.Originally Posted by Proletariat

On the other hand a gay person can defend themselves in a verbal dustup.
Fair enough.
Ohh so thats the punchline? Lol thats a good one.."What's better than winning the gold medal in the Special Olympics?.... Not being a retard."![]()
Take jokes for what they are... jokes. Oversensitivity, especially when the joke doesnt affect you, is.. well.. gay.![]()
Oh and Im glad San Fran didnt accept the Iowa, they'd probably paint it pink.. Id prefer a piece of history as important as that be kept out of the land of bundled sticks.![]()
Thanks for the PM Dave, and apology most definitely accepted. For my part, I know I come off as kind of a fussy, prude old lady sometimes, and self-righteous indignation (a pose that doesn't really look good on anybody) gets the better of me.Originally Posted by Devastatin Dave

Back OT:
This decision with respect to the Iowa, as has been said, was made democratically. And since it's not in violation of either the California or the United States' Constitution, people can bitch about it all they want, but they still have to respect it.
I personally think San Fran picked the wrong way to protest the Iraq war, but what the hell do I know...

They don't deserve the boat any way. I say they put it where there are patriotic people who deserve to have a great piece of history![]()

It would have been one of the defining images of the new century.
