Default Iron Maiden or Iron Butterfly?

Being bored out of my mind (as indicated by the fact that I just posted in the Chainsaw thread- and I don't even own a chainsaw) I have decided to post a standoff between the two "iron" bands. Hope none of the moderators see this as spam; after all, one of the big foci in the frontroom is music. So, choose which is your favorite band, or both (probably noone) or the generic "gah" if you hate them both.

My personal preference is for Iron Butterfly. They are one of the best and most underrated bands in history, at least in my opinion.

Edit: I know the poll says "Whish band"- it's supposed to be "Which band", but I don't know how to edit the poll.

    Maiden.

Iron Maiden rocks and is a legend whereas i've never even heard of the other band ever, hence they must not be anywhere near as good

I only sort of like Ina Gadda Da Vida or whatever, but I don't like any Maiden songs. I'm afraid I'd have to go Gah, thouhg if push comes to shove, Butterfly.

Steppe you are truely a hero if you can last through Ina Gadda Da Vida. I know I just can't do it. Is their even a point to that song?

Not sure. But I'm used to long songs... but I didn't really like it. Other wise I would have voted for them.

Maiden is getting more than I thought. I thought they would both be getting whipped by the "Gah".

Steppe Merc- "In A Gaddah Da Vida" is one of Butterfly's longest songs. Almost all their songs are much shorter; they sound like a heavier version of The Doors. Give them a chance.

Silliest poll ever. Comparing a group with one decent song to one with too many to count decent albums and if you like thier kind of music their far better at it than Iron Butterfly was at their style.

Big G says it all. I have no idea who Iron Butterfly are/were, and I am sorry to say I don't care either. Iron Maiden on the other hand are arguably the greatest metal band there has ever been. And if not the greatest, certainly top five.

I suppose Iron Butterfly was a bad choice... Despite the fact that almost everyone has only heard "In-A-Gaddah-Da-Vida", Iron Butterfly was actually a very good band. They are a heavier version of the Doors, that's all; and, in my opinion, they far surpassed The Doors who, after their first album (which was amazing) became a blues band- which would be okay if Morrison wasn't a horrendous blues writer. If you want good hippie blues, listen to Creedence Clearwater.

Anyway, this poll was mainly for those who have really heard the two groups, not for people have only heard Maiden and assume the only song that Butterfly did was "In-A-Gaddah-Da-Vida".

I guess it was a lost cause from the beginning.

For a stage crew kind-of-a-guy, I thought you would have had a more favourable impression of Iron Butterfly.

When I saw them they put on a great live show. Goodness knows they didn't get serious airplay with most of their stuff, but at least they were real musicians who could play live and put on a great '60s impro jam session. Not like today's toadstools who can neither sing nor play a note.

I'm not dissing Iron Maiden (do they do Dr. Feelgood? The neighbours nearly torched my house after I played that song with the amp at 11) not at all, just saying that Iron Butterfly were much deeper than that one admittedly great song.

Oh Beirut, old boy! Dr. Feelgood was by Motley Crue, who are just a sick joke .

Iron Maiden are the greatest heavy metal band ever! Listen to 'Murders In The Rue Morgue' 'The Prisoner' 'Run To The Hills' 'Hallowed Be Thy Name' 'Aces High' 'Infinite Dreams' 'Can I Play With Madness' 'Fear Of The Dark' or 'The Wicker Man' - any of those should convince you!

Oops. But then again I know as much about heavy metal as I do about uranium enrichment.

Still, Dr. Feelgood is a great song to play LOUD.

I love the Doors! I think Morrison was an excellent singer/songwriter, and not all of their stuff is bluesy (though I love the stuff that is). I mean is Peace Frog, LA Woman, the End or a whole bunch more a blues song?

I voted for Iron Maiden because I like the whole range of their songs more. I like Iron Butterfly as well, though. It was a tough choice. I've never seen Iron Maiden play live. I've seen Iron Butterfly play live. A good friend of mine is one of the original members of Blue Öyster Cult, and Iron Maiden has been on the bill at times when I've gone to see BÖC play. Yes, I am that old. (sigh)

Iron Maiden had a nasty time at Ozzest last weekend in LA. Apparently Bruce Dickinson had a confrontation or said something about Ozzie which set Sharon off, so during their set, the sound kept going out and the fans tossed all kinds of crap including eggs at them. The eggs part had to have been pre-planned. Who goes to a concert with eggs?

That's why I would never go to any sort of metal concert... not only do I don't like the music, the fans scare me.

Aenlic, which Blue Oyster Cult member do you like? The one who played the cowbell? (Sorry, SNL joke...)

Heh, he's a good friend, so I won't spill his name. He plays a lot of online games these days and prefers to keep his identity under wraps. He thinks the SNL episode is mildly amusing but full of odd errors. Their original producer and manager, Sandy Pearlman, was the guy who really suggested the cowbell, and at one point in the sketch one of them turns to the Donnie "Buck Dharma" character and calls him Eric, which is sort of backwards. On stage, no one plays the cowbell; it's done by one of the guitar/sound techs off stage during the song.

Other groups used cowbells all the time during those wonderful 70's years; it's just BÖC who is going to get remembered for it now. Rainbow used a cowbell all the time. Odd coincidence that Bobby Rondinelli was their drummer for a lot of years up until last fall, and he was previously the drummer for Rainbow for a while. Now he's doing a 70's revival band called the Lizards, I think. Their last bass player, Danny Miranda left last fall too, to do the Queen stage show in Vegas and ended up getting hired to play bass for the Queen with Paul Rodgers tour.

Incidentally, it was Sandy Pearlman who first coined the term heavy metal music, in an article in Crawdaddy magazine in 1967. It was also Sandy Pearlman who came up with the name Blue Öyster Cult and another Crawdaddy ex-writer and music critic Richard Meltzer who added the umlaut.

Well, at probable final count, Iron Butterfly lost bigtime. I suppose that, other than their names, these bands have too little in common to compare, their respective fanbases in particular. Then again, this thread was boredom-driven.

If I try this again, I promise to use more relevant bands- The Doors and Creedence Clearwater, for example. More along the lines of music I actually know.
