Thread: After conquering a rebel land!

Exclamation After conquering a rebel land!

Hi, i want to ask a question about conquering a rebel land. I mean, after i conquered a rebel land, the parchament asks to me what i would do for the captured rebel troops.
    "
1- Execute / enslave them all ! (which i always do)
2- Execute / enslave the ringleaders
    3- Release them all
    "
I wonder, what happens at each options?

And another thing i wonder is after the automatically done battle, parchament says that some of the buildings were destroyed and some were damaged. It is ok for the castles (they could be damaged during assault) but why my soldiers destroy or give damage another buildings?

1- Execute / enslave them all ! (which i always do)
This option adds a vice that increases dread. (+1 I know of for sure)

2- Execute / enslave the ringleaders
    This option does nothing.

    3- Release them all
This option adds a virtue that increases happiness. (Do it a few times to get up to 20%)

Some people say to do #1 & #3 a few times to get the v&v’s then only do #2

I always release them cause I figure it will help the loyalty in the province.

Every time you kill the rebels, the governor of the province runs the risk of getting one of the "rebel killer" vices:

    * Swift Justice - He has been known to execute every last rebel captured as an example to others. +1 Dread.
    * Secret Rough Justice - When suppressing rebellions, he secretly includes otherwise innocent petty enemies in the list of those to be arrested and executed. +1 Dread.
    * Rough Justice - When suppressing rebellions, he includes otherwise innocent victims of his own petty vendettas in the list of those to be executed. No one dares speak out against this practice. +2 Dread, -10 Happiness.
    * Tough Justice - He is draconian in his measures when suppressing rebellions, executing everyone involved and many innocents around him. No one is safe. +3 Dread, -10 Happiness.
    * Secret Random Justice - He has given up any pretence of justice when dealing with rebels, executing all those captured and randomly selecting other victims by rolling dice. So far no-one has noticed. +3 Dread, -20 Happiness.
    * Random Justice - Everyone now knows there is no justice in his rule. His methods for selecting who is accused of treason and executed seem entirely random. The people hate him. +3 Dread, -50 Happiness.

As you can see, the more times you execute the more dread you get, but the more happiness goes down. By the time you get to "random justice" your province will revolt every time you give it a chance - you'll either need to replace the govenor or build a big garrison and some happy buildings to make them stop. I like to do this early in the game in one or two of the naturally more rebellious provinces like Latvia, Scotland or Portugal - it's a great way to train up generals and make money from land seizures. As time goes by, and as you build more military tech in the province, the rebellions will grow in size and sophistication - the fight is harder, but the prizes are bigger.

BTW - I've found that if you execute rebels in a province that doesn't have a governor the vice will often be given to your king instead.

And here's what happens if you keep releasing the prisoners. I haven't been able to get too far in this series - the only way would be to keep the rebellions coming somehow, but each time you get one of these virtues happiness goes up....

    * Occasional Mercy - He has shown mercy to captured rebels which has made him popular. +10 Happiness.
    * Frequent Mercy - He is known for showing mercy to captured rebels. +20 Happiness, -1 Dread.
    * Merciful - He is indeed merciful when dealing with captured rebels. +20 Happiness, -2 Dread.
    * Most Merciful - He is famous for showing mercy to captured rebels. +20 Happiness, -3 Dread.

If they rebelled against someone else, I let all them go. I mean really, they did me a favor. Even if they start out as a rebel faction like Scotland or Wales, I let them all go.

But if they attack ME, I slay them all. Its called lack of respect.

yea, i am welcomed to your forum. and i think it is very good. I have been play the MTW when it is on sale. But i am new to the forum. I had read some posts and seen so many things (complexed and serious things) in there.
thank you fo your all replies :)
i must be careful from now on for the sake of province from now on.
the most i kill the rebels the less happiness, the less happiness the most rebel. hey, its just like a circle.
and what about my second question??
After the automatically done battle, parchament says that some of the buildings were destroyed and some were damaged. It is ok for the castles (they could be damaged during assault). But why my soldiers destroy or give damage another buildings?

I'm really not sure about your second question? It also irritates me when
I attack a province that is loaded with buildings/etc, then the game says
5 were destroyed and 4 were damaged. My question would be: Do damaged
buildings still 'work'??? A real pisser!

Sure the damaged buildings still work, the're only been degenerated. For example a damaged horse breeder becomes an horse farmer or a master whatever becomes a whatever guild

What I've observed-- if you take a province without a fight, the level of destruction is fairly minor.

But if the enemy loses it through a battle or a long siege, alot of buildings get destroyed. I believe this is realistic, both because the enemy would be burning some stuff so you couldn't use it and your men would likely want to do some pillaging and keep their share of the booty.

Remember, half the reason people were even IN the army back then was for booty. Sun Tzu touches on this point rather strongly.

    Why is this?

And what about the loot? Sometimes my troops loot so money from the conquered provincei sometimes they loot less. Is this dealt with the acumen of the general or something else??

It depends on the buildings destroyed during the conquest. IIRC you get 50% of the building cost, unless you are the Vikings (and have not yet been converted to Christendom), in that case you get 100%.

I think it only applies to treatment of rebels, since that is the only situation where you get the choice, outside of the in-battle button.

How often do you check your king's V&V's though? It could be your kings have had it, at some stage but then the heir takes over and you're back to square one.

It could be you are being consistent about checking the king's V&V's but only ever bothering to do so just after they take to the throne, instead of after each incident of prisoner release.

By rights, it should be popping up on the 'V&Vs gained' summary, assuming you're using VI.

Now I think about it, I suspect you may be right.

As Byz, only three battles with rebels to date. Serbia, I remember seeing the execution choice screen but forget what I did with the prisoners. Definitely don't recall any V&V alert, whatever my choice was.
Crimea, 40 mounted serges retreated to castle. Fought my first non-autocalc castle assault since VI and killed every last one of them.
Khazar, castle fell in year two and I didn't attempt assault. No prisoner message that I recall other than 'confiscated lands'.

So it's either lack of opportunity or there really are no more rebel_mercy V&Vs in VI....

My first foray as the Saxons ended up with the Vikings in revolt, allowing me to take over Scandinavia and leaving the rebels in charge of Denmark. I cleaned up the remainder of their colonies on the Scottish coast and Man to destroy their fleets (which were preventing trade and the free movement of my armies).

Later on they re-emerged in Ulster with a couple of good stacks, but with Ulster being a good Catholic country their king immediately converted. After that they gave me no trouble whatsoever, didn't build any fleets and stayed as good neighbours until I chose to end the game by invading and destroying them.

Earlier in the game I had sent about a dozen bishops to convert the Viking homelands, but they resisted to the bitter end.

Sun Tzu eh? Surprisingly, reading the Art of War (its not very long although the style can be a bit irritating) makes you understand the battle mechanics of TW much better. I've yet to understand why management consultants in the 80s got off on it, but for TW its great. Although the basic theory of 'turn up with more men, better fed, better trained and with better morale than your enemy and you'll win' seems somewhat obvious.

Oh, and if you want to save the buildings - siege your enemy and then bribe him to your side. No building damage.
