Caligula had a couple of great barges built on a lake, I forget what lake. It was the one that Mussolini drained via an ancient Roman tunnel so that he could get to the ships.
One was a temple ship with oars and such, while the other was basically a small palace that had to be towed around. They served no real purpose until the 20th century whjen they were used to learn more about ancient Roman boat-building techniques. All that Caligula did on these boats was pursue hedonistic pleasures with his pals.
