Hi Ichi,

so it WAS you I spotted!

In the right hand list your name was greyed out for a lot of the time, so I couldn't send any messages to you. Guess you were in-game.

I had a whale of a time actually. Loused up a lot of things, got creamed but still contrived to be on the winning side several times

2v2 I'm fairly comfortable with, 3v3 I felt crowded out in the centre (wanted space for my Ginettes but had trees and allied troops in the way) and it'll take time to adjust to the bigger matches but 1v1 would allow me to do things at my own pace, so I'd be happy to meet up.

I'm off looking for that logfile-reader thingy.

I got the Shogun logfile reader by mistake and discovered that it doesn't understand the MTW logfile format.

Tried again, got the right one and find it very easy to use, yet slightly confusing where the summary of your battle results (bold letters) doesn't tally with the totals on the lower right of the scrolling spreadsheet-thing.

Also, I'm seeing anomalies where it appears that a player spent more than their florin allocation and even some of my selections show this, so there seems to be some kind of error in the unit costs coded into it.

Was it designed for MTW and costs are different in v2.01?

I shall be online again today... for MOST of today, I suspect
Hope to see you there.

ichi,

I'm going online sometime in the next 10 mins. A 1 v 1 would be most welcome. See you there.

You may have to relog after each multiplayer battle to refresh the player list.

I use the TWBrowser for reading logfiles, and it works well for VI.

Hi Puzz,

Yup, I have to relog often, since I've been hosting quite a bit.

I notice people's names in the right-hand list grey out when they go afk too.

The one I've got is "TW Logfile Browser 2" but there's no menus, such as Help|About to even see who it's by.

Truth be, only Kafirs knows how to teach - ask anyone ... like T1, eh? But, Kafirs don't have patience with those unwilling to listen - much like the old stw AI teacher ("Wrong! Are you stupid or do you persist in disobedience?").

Me, I am sorta patient - but, do not forgive the same mistake more than twice - after screwing up twice I figure a person is not really intent on learning the system so much as watching his men die (much like Bush430.

Thats my offer. Obey me, or die.

Ichi,

I've seen you in the lobby several times but it seems you're seldom in a talkative mood and I'm puzzled as to why. It's rather unnerving...

I don't think we even managed a 'debrief' discussion after your training match with me - I checked the lobby shortly afterwards but it seems you'd gone.

If I've caused offence of some kind, please let me know what it was, so that I can apologize for it.

Not at all. Sometimes when there's 7 Hunters all chatting at once I miss messages, and sometimes I go AFK and miss also.

Look forward to seeing you online.

Hi ichi,

I have to admit that, seeing a bunch of Hunters all online but not greyed out as per in-game, it did occur to me that a conflab was in progress, so I thought better than to keep re-keying my messages and just said 'goodnight all' and left.

I can see some merit in hosting a game not to fight out a battle but as a team meeting room, since you can then filter the public chat and just talk to those in the game session. Of course, you'd need to password it if it was team tactics talk and, if not, stick on a title which makes it clear to those in the lobby that it's not going to be a battle anytime soon.

Occasionally, I've seen the NTW game being hosted, with 3/8 players and listed for longer than you'd expect for an actual battle setup, so I think they already use this technique. Similar occasional appearances by the ACW group - not enough members for a decent battle, so looking more like a general get-together.

Hi octavian,

ON = Ontario? Give or take a bout of insomnia on my part, you're unlikely to spot me except at the weekends and if you start early in the day but I'd certainly welcome a go with Vikings. I'm none too familiar with the unit types though, having never attempted them, even in single player.

As a matter of fact, various things have stopped me from progressing SP campaigns very far into High, let alone Late era in MTW so, in MP, I'm frequently fighting with - and facing against - unit types which I'm equally unfamiliar with and it's taking time to adjust.

I suppose the trouble with Viking MP is that, if they're overwhelmingly the best faction you can pick, from the options available, then EVERY mp battle will just end up being Viking vs Viking, which must get a bit dull after a time, no?
I'm happy to indulge in more than a few Viking civil war battles but will inevitably end up experimenting with some of the others, if only to see if any of them have a hope of standing up to them.

Hope to see you online sometime.

try the irish!!! thier overwhelming numbers and sharp pointy flying sticks can send the vikings packing and they have good cavs. :) vikings is an overlooked era, but one that is more intuitive than the others, imo.

i had some fun games with ichi the other night, even went to mtw vanilla for some interesting games, didn't even have to engage my army in the one

1)well i donno where you live, but my time online vary from early afternoon till 5AM depending on whats going on that day. ive had times where i was the only North American online ('cept for one drunk guy :D) everyone else was Australia etc :P
2) well quite frankly, i never use the vikings. i find their lack of any type of decent cav weakens them as much as their uber inf strenghtens them. a well balanced mercian army for example with valoured up saxon huscarles can hold its own and often win) against a viking army. (vikings dont like getting charged from behind by mounted nobles you see :P)

One of the funnest (and funniest) nights spent playing MTW online ever. During the next morning exercises I quit doing situps cause my belly hurt from laughing so much.

Backstabbin swipers. Gotta love vanilla

That's exactly what you would think normally. Joms and Huscarles are a terror in the campaign game but in multiplayer you can upgrade all sorts of strange units and turn them into fierce fighting machines. You won't find many serious players even use the Vikings for the very reason octavian said... their cav is so poor. The strongest unit imho is a valor 3 or 4 celtic warrior. It's a hundred sword unit with an irresistable charge like the highlander clansmen in mtw. These guys dont even wear shirts so the armor piercer's(guys with the axes) are less effective against them. The Picts and the Welsh both have access to them. The Picts will have better cav but the Welsh will have the bandits...at Val1 or 2 the longbow-ninja sword guys are pretty tough.

There's something silly about that concept, don't you think?

No armour = more effective versus AP?

I thought the idea was that AP bonus is supposed to negate armour bonus but someone with no armour should get sliced up like a good un?

I recall raising this in a debate some time ago and can't remember what the resolution of it was.

I'm encouraged to hear that serveral of the other factions will aquit themselves well, suitably valoured up. How about when the florins are limited and there's no leeway to valour up anything? Would you recommend taking fewer units, with adequate valour improvements, or chance it with 16 x v0?

Well, I hope I see some of you guys on there, ready for a game. I just can't get to play! there are so few people, and the ones that are there seem to be in MTW, not VI. I'm coming close to giving up.

Oh, no no no Axe, im always there (ask EYG and ichi) to allow peoples to whoop my ass. Login and we could have some games. But beware of my cavs on the left flank

@Eyg: when the florins is under 10k i seldom take full 16 units, agree with u

Reply
t1master 02:53 09-09-2005
no, i disagree.. always take 16 units. you can do more in terms of shattering enemy morale with the outnumbered bonus, plus you will have more units to help flank, even if they are of inferior morale, the flank penalty will further disgrace enemy troops into fleeing. ;)
