    Default opinions on MechWarrior 3 & 4

recently i came across a brand new copy of MechWarrior 3 for $10 CAD

    i bought it

then i realized that there were actually some other MechWarrior games after that

    so my questions are:

    1. what are all your opinions of MechWarrior 3?

    2. what are all your opinions of MechWarrior 4 and all of it's various versions?

    3. how does MechWarrior 3 stack up to MechWarrior 4?

    4. have you had any trouble getting MechWarrior 3 to not crash on Windows XP, and if so how did you fix the problem exactly?

Mechwarrior 3 is the last real mechwarrior game. After that, they butchered it. Completely. Restricting the mech modding, although realistic, eliminated any and all chance to emulate the mechs from the TROs, of which there are hundreds. By gaining realism, they forfeited variety and flexibility. Never again would I pilot a facsimile Marauder into battle, nor a top-of-the-line Tessen or Saggitaire.

Mech 3 wasn't bad. Wasn't especially hard, and didn't seem to have the same depth as Mech 2: Mercs or Mech 2, but it wasn't bad, and it was certainly a lot easier to get running on a modern machine. It was a good bit less simmy and more arcadey then Mech 2 though.

Didn't play Mech 4. The whole 'color coded customizations' thing in the demo pretty much turned me off.

Heavy Gear 2 was also a great mech game. Made by the guys that did Mechwarrior series before MS got the license.

I like MW4... but I wish they would remove the whole 'Mech' thing from the title. Altering the customization set ups that anyone could do just made the game dumb. But I do like MW3 more, despite some of its odd issues itself. The combat and graphics are still fun even now.

If you can get past the annoying customization of MW4, MW4: Mercenaries is a wonderful game.

    I have MW4: Vengeance.
    Loved the training missions.

But when I set up even a 1 on 1 training mission,
I find it really hard to co-ordinate the movement between,
    move direction and torso direction.

Keep frigg'n running into things and don't know were
    I'm going.
Any Hints on how I can learn to control these things.
Really like the buzz of walking around in them, but
one the combat starts......well,.. it's a bit hectic

may be this type of game just ain't for me.

I actually agree with that. My old roommates used to play that game all the time, and I sometimes played as well. (I usually had more fun watching them, though. ) It had a decent storyline for the singleplayer campaign, and the multiplayer matches were just insane. I understand if people outright despise MW4, but for myself it always brings back fond memories.

Have to say, I enjoyed the games tremendously - especially whenever I could make myself a laserboat... the Sunder, when it turned up, was quite handy for that. Course, a triple AC20 armed Dire Wolf was always entertaining...

My final config for the last missions were all Dire Wolves with AC20s (or the Clan versions). Sometimes I'll throw in an Atlas if I needed more firepower and I didnt have a Dire Wolf to spare.
One fun thing, however, is to load up a Dire Wolf with nothing but Flamers. I went through the entire MW4:V game with that config. It's funny watching the enemy try to hurt you while he's shut down.

Ah yes... flamers - they were funny. I played online once or twice, and came across people who were intensely irritating - they'd rock up, flame me into shutdown, and charbroil my poor 'mech.

Heh, I also did find a perverse joy in going on line in something puny and turbocharged, and running round zapping people with one medium laser, or something, whilst being well-nigh impossible to hit...

Play with a stripped-down Raven with max engines on Capture The Flag. Your team will love you for it.

I only ever played Mechwarrior 2, and it came free with the Celeron years ago. Reading this thread makes me wish I'd taken the time to buy more Mechwarrior games.

I did play Earthsiege and Earthsiege 2, though, which I thought were quite good.

I played MW2 and MW2: GBL to death, and I still yearn for the days when I had a computer capable of playing them. I loved them because they were true to the miniature game in customization, right down to including Clan CASE on all your body parts even though you never use IS CASE. I first got hooked on MW2 back when you could rent computer games at the local video store. I never once heard of MechWarrior or BattleTech, but the storyline and reads were fascinating to me.

3 was cool till you played multi. then the hackers ate you for lunch. i think part of the reason 4 was 'dumbed down' was due to the hacking on 3. 4 was still good, especially if you got the expansions, though. and the multi was fixed in 4.
