    Are civil wars unavoidable?
I'm at my third campaign and punctually, around 1270, a civil war occurs. First I thought cause my English king was losing all the territories to the Almo and things were going bad, but now I was doing pretty well with the Byzantines!

Lots of governers who have just been chilling and not fighting probably got some nasty vices.

Was it an actual civil war, where a general rose up against you to take the throne for himself? Or was it just a bunch of provinces that happened to rebel at the same time?

Civil wars are avoidable. I ve written a large post titled Causes of Civil Wars and how to prevent them but I cannot find it... It was pretty good IMHO

I don't think Civil Wars are manditory. I have played a few games to 100% victory without them happening.

Heres a tip, you will NEVER have a revolt where the king is so if you can spare it, keep all your royalty in one providence. That way, they can't lead the revolt. Also, you can do what I do and kill off all non loyal generals.

Over bad V&Vs or Loyalty, I'm killing the low loyalty general first. I don't care if hes a sissy coward that likes little boychildren and spend all his time killing trade and stealing from the poor to buy pot and beer. Still, in my eyes, hes better than a William Walace taking over my stuff just because he doesn't like me.

    Great tip.

I have rarely had a civil war. But when I have, I think my kings low influence was a factor (English game I think).

I only had it happen twice, both times I'd just been pounded by my enemies, low influence was the cause I think.

Be sure to have borderforts and spies in the same province of your entire royal family could be a quicky for some assasins...

If you want to eliminate the risk of civil war, just do the usual despotic thing and declare war on some small neighoburing state. Your influence will increase and the generals you send into battle seem to gain loyalty. Once you have a huge empire, loyalty issues become a thing of the past.

    1. Stay active. Don't let your top generals sit around for too long doing nothing.

    2. Spies, in each province preferably, keep the happiness levels up. Also, you will often get intelligence reports about disloyalty, and the chance to do something about it before catastrophe strikes.

    3. Change the composition of large stacks if they are led by disloyal generals. Leave these turncoats by themselves. Don't let them sit there in charge of armies until you're committed to battle.

    4. Destroy and rebuild 20% agriculture facilities in your poor farming provinces to get the "Steward" virtue for your ruler. Do the same with Inns and other cheap buildings to get the "Builder" virtue.

    5. Don't lose more than one province to outside aggressors in a single year. This is a big one.
