Is there a way to subscribe to a thread even if you don't have anything to post in it. I can see an option once I hit reply to subscribe to the thread and but I don't understand how to do it without posting in that thread. Any help much appreciated.

Right at the top of the thread there is a button "thread tools". It has a roll-down menu that includes the subscription options.
