Thread: A backBACKroom or... something similar...

Default A backBACKroom or... something similar...

I am sure you have heard it all before.... But perhaps I have an idea to meet in the middle for red zone stuff. I'm not talking porn or anything ridiculous like that. God knows there is plenty of that online already!

But I think there should be a seperate forum, unbeknownst to the average patron, where swearing and other ridiculous stuff could take place. You know, instaed of just closing a thread, you say "take it outside" and the forum gets moved to this backbackroom. A little heated debate, a little name calling, some swearing, then everybody dusts themselves off and shakes hands.

This could be an invite-only private forum (like some of the modders get), bestowed upon members that are regular to the Org and have a post count of like 1,000 or something. The condition would be that the member could not post in the regular threads about the backbackroom on punishment of 3 month ban or more! Of course, you would not be able to prevent PMs, but most newcomers would still be oblivious to it because they don't get many PMs anyway.

The post count of 1,000 would have to be pretty solid. All spam thread posts should be deducted from the total count for this consideration. For example, you will note thast I have very few posts in the frontroom spam-fun threads. "Word Association Game": 1 post, "Word Association Game": 10 posts. And sure I have a few drunken posts here and there, but really not that many. I have been a member for about 9 months and almost all of my 900 posts are solid and contributory to the community. The minimum requirements for going to the backbackroom (or whatever you name it), should be one year's membership and one thousand posts, with spam thread posts not counting.

By only having members who are solid in the community, you ensure that they will generally behave in the back back room. You know these members, and they won't be willing to jeopardize their good standing. Trust me, I learned my lesson. No edit button and I have to wait a hundred years between each post? It's misery I tell ya! But you all should know what to expect from me, and others around here. You read our posts on a daily basis and should know us regulars.

Where else can we tell dirty jokes and swear and sing lude drinking songs like the computer warriors we all are?! Where else can I tell someone I know and respect that he is a *************** or a **, with good not-so-clean fun in mind?

It follows on the use of the word F*** as noted elsewhere in the WT. And it gives some of us sluberdegullions a place to be ridiculous when our drunken uncle pays a visit.

Thanks for thinking about this. I hope you will at least give it a shot. If it doesn't work, or becomes a pain, then just shut it down and go back to the way it was. No harm, no foul.

    Thanks again and warmest regards

    DA,
what you are aksing for has been asked for by many different people since the org began. you note that the org is a place for self restraint and self moderation and tolerance where people of various persuasions can get together and discuss things. but i think that if we were to create a back backroom, that would be getting rid of that exact self-moderation, that makes people come to the org in the first place. so you'd basically be creating an anti-org. and i know you want the punishments harsh for 'taking it outside' the back backroom, and that only proven members would be allowed to join, but i often see some people who argue rudely against each other in the backroom, also do it more subtly and with more emoticons in other places like the frontroom, so i think it would be difficult to just leave the animosity in the back backroom, and not 'take it outside.' eventually i fear, what would happen would be a strong backlash by the enforcers of the org, who would not only shut down the back backroom, but also the normal backroom if it got out of hand.

THere are places to go to rant and rave. .org is not and will not be one of them. As noted htis request comes up on a relatively regular basis, and, as noted, the end result will be the same.

The .org is primarily a gaming forum. The Backroom is tolerated only because it is a lightning rod for political and ideological energy emanating from the other boards of the .org.

So for a change, Backroomers, let us not assume that we are the center of TosaInu's universe and be content with the Backroom as it is.

I don't feel like my Org experience is lessened with the absence of an off-color forum or anything. Just saying if it somehow became available I'd partake for awhile until I got sick of the 'Viagra rewls!' and 'Cottage cheese pwns Squeez E Cheese!' threads.

If a forum like that was created, events that occurred within it would very quickly have ramifications for other forums.

Maybe. But you would end having to filter out 10 "Buy ch3@p v1@gr@ n0\/\/!1111!!11111!!" threads per every useful one.

Any backbackroom would very rapidly degrade into a latrine. There are way too many stupid people out there, and too many people who are just smart and malicious enough to take advantage of something like this. I don't even want to think about how aggressive and angry I could get in a backbackroom- I have a very bad temper in real life, and I can usually keep it in check in a civil place like the Org. But when I am unrestrained...

I think those of you who cannot control your impulses to swear should either set up your own forums, or simply exchange phone numbers by PM and call each other up at all hours of the night and say nasty things to each other in the dark.

Just imagine the fun that could lead to...

Beirut- as long as you are here, how do I get rid of my warning level? I mean, are you just going to let it run for the 365 days or what? Or do the mods really hate me because I am a socialist?

Edit: oops- you've been gone a while.

The Tavern was only fairly recently split into Front/Back rooms .
It works as it is , why change it again ?

Well, I think a backbackroom, or an "outside" would be nice. I agree with Divinus on the whole "blow off some steam and then shake hands thing", but I see not everyone agrees with such a manly to discuss differences.

The Chat is pretty much unadultrated, though. If people used that more often, it could become the backbackroom.

Everytime I click the Chat link above I get the error :

    "Startup error:java.lang.Error:Unknown configuration property UseInfo"

I already have an updated Java. The error sounds something about the language. Any help possible ?

WHAT?!?!?! Doth thee sayeth that the Org revolves not around the backroom, but the backroom about the Org!?! Prithee, open your heretical mouth no more! The high priests of backroomism* will swiftly deal with you!

To the topic, I must say I'm against this. It'd just be a stupid spot with crappy threads that would only create dislike for one's fellow Orgerine and the vile would spill forth into other areas.

The tavern is a fine place as it stands. Except, of course, that you can't buy beer. But I'll let that slide.

Now that is an issue that requires some attention. What is a tavern without beer, ale and hard liquor (for the backroom)?

It is just an idea that may be worth trying. For long time members, of course. Make it a year and half membership, hell two years if you really want to be restricitve or 2,000 posts. Or 3,000. Whatever.

I just think that a place to get a tad more ridiculous might be interesting and productive. I have been in heated debates myself in the backroom and have obviously crossed the line a few times.

It might be a novel experiment to see what happens. If the lords of the Org say Nay, then so be it, I'll drop the subject. But this is the watchtower, so I am just making a suggestion. Hell, I'm glad I'm even able to do that and actually get a response.

Either way, the Org is still the best forum out there.

I am against the discrimination of low-post members from the post-every-second ones.

One can easily make "blank" posts to find 2000 by sometime. The post count does not, in any means, assure the characteristical reliability of a patron. And that opinion of mine will be the same when I have 2000.

Yeah, lets give the mods even more work. They will not only have to moderate a ridiculously flamefilled forum, they will also have to check a users post history. The idea just makes no sense to me, the idea of a discussion forum is to have a discussion, not a shouting match. If you can't reason your way through a debate maybe you shouldn't be in it.

After some reflective thought, I revoke this suggestion.

TosaInu and others are correct. It will spill over.

After all, look at the attitudes of deference and humility some new members show in their intial posts. Once they get into that backroom, it's all downhill.

This would include me. At this point most of this spillover is simply excess fun. Hell, just look at my drunken posts! That's just me being an idiot and losing my dignity!

I fear that if we had a backbackroom, then the spillover would not be "fun" or innocent mischief. The spillover would be anger, spite, and vengeance.

And that... in all circumstances is completely unacceptable. I am far too fond of the Org to condone anything that may lead to intentional wrongs.

TosaInu, you have a fine site here. I am freshly impressed.
